5 reasons i may go European after all

dear Europe – i miss you but am returning shortly. PS: i’m sure you’ve been holding your breath!

lately i’ve been teased that i’ve spent so much time in Europe that i might just consider relocating and going Euro all the way. perhaps having it as a home base would make more sense in my travel schedule & certainly in my newly formed habits.

don't make leave you, Europe, sil vous plait

don’t make leave you, Europe, sil vous plait

i can tell you this much, it is VERY tempting at times. i LOVE to travel lots of places but i do have a soft spot for Europe. AND after my 30 day tour, i have a kindred feeling with going European more than ever. i’m sure my European counterparts will shudder to read these words but, hey, i’m a chick from the US and these are the things that me make feel like it may be time to make the conversion.

money

that’s right. although i had to go from Czech Crowns, to Euros, to British Pounds and back to Euros, nothing about these changes in currency seemed odd like when i returned home and found the US dollar quite dull. i thought to myself, it really IS odd that they are all the same size and same color. it really IS a confusing currency let alone not very fashionable with its lack of colorfulness.

language

although i speak no foreign language fluently, it was bizarro to me when, at the end of my 30 day stint, i arrived in the UK and everyone was speaking English. can you imagine the culture shock i had when i returned to the States and there wasn’t even any English accent or funny British phrase to confuse me? how about a restaurant menu in a foreign language with the back pages in translated English. yeah, i miss it all.

wine with lunch

i’m not saying that people in the United States don’t drink wine with lunch, it’s just not nearly as common place. when in Europe and surrounded by Europeans having their rose with their baguette mid-day, it makes you feel like less of a lush for just succumbing to their obvious peer pressure.

230096_174965725976151_479333301_n

crazy train rides

although i’d say i’m not the most savvy packer for train travel and while i find some of the rules & regulations a bit wacky over there in Euroland, i do miss all the funny exchanges i’ve had with other passengers and train staff. train travel is a bonding experience and i’m looking forward to hitting the rails again really soon.

airports & Paris flights

ever since the day of my departure from Europe (specifically Paris) i’ve considered repeatedly hopping back on a flight to Paris on a whim.

exhibit A: upon landing in the US at the end of my Eurotour, i heard a final boarding call to Charles de Gaulle, turned myself around and headed in that gate’s direction. only when i arrived at the gate did i remember i was no longer in Europe & sadly back on home turf.

exhibit B: when my traveling buddy, Leah, came to visit me in Boston & i was late to pick her up, she tweeted me saying she was going to jump a flight to Paris if i didn’t hurry up. i promptly replied, not without me. I WASN’T KIDDING.

well, i know you probably really don’t care about my Euro dilemmas that much. i can see your point. thankfully, my whining stops here as i will have a shot-in-the-arm cure-all next week.

that’s right! i’m headed back to Euroland to explore Switzerland & visit Copenhagen. so bring on the long-haul Euro flights, the crazy train rides, all the foreign currencies yet to be fondled, the multiple foreign languages that will confuse & delight me. AND for GODS SAKE, give me the wine with lunch!

The Great Escape – Newport, RI Edition

thegreatescape

Welcome to “America’s First Resort” Newport, RI

The sailing capital of the world, Newport has a vast history, much of which has to do with it being a “City by the Sea”. Known for its Naval Academy as well as being home to bootleggers in the Triangle Trade, Newport was also a place for practicing religious freedom. Later, in the 19th and 20th centuries, Newport became the summer playground to the elite.

newport harbor

Today Newport remains a beautiful location to visit for all kinds of interests. Only a 1.5 hour drive from Boston’s Logan Airport, it’s an ideal place for a ‘Great Escape’. Whether you choose to visit during peak Fall foliage, the Winter holiday season when the city is decked out with lights or in the height of the beach and sailing season, late Spring & Summertime, Newport is always a perfect coastal destination.

eat

Franklin Spa

An old standby known as ‘The Best Greasy Spoon in Newport’, Franklin Spa is a great spot for a diner breakfast. You may have to wait a bit and it’s cash only but it is worth any possible hassle.

Salvation Cafe

salvation cafe

Fresh, funky & fabulous, Salvation Cafe is a local favorite with its eclectic cuisine and just reopened in late 2012 after renovations. I can attest that the locals must be glad this institution is back. Located in the revitalized area of Newport – Broadway, which – BONUS is a little off the touristy path!

TSK – Thames Street Kitchen

A buzz word in Newport, TSK is a quaint spot a bit removed from the “tourist scene” of Thames. The concept is true farm to table with TSK’s menu changing weekly. Another bonus is it’s BYOB making the experience more affordable. PS – the staff are incredible.

Sunset Cocktails

A long time favorite of visitors and locals alike is the stunning Castle Hill off Ocean Drive. Not only is the view amazing but they mix some delicious drinks. I tried the ‘Oyster Martini’ a house specialty made with tomato-basil puree & organic Crop tomato vodka. BEST cocktail of my weekend in Newport!

Bar Hopping

Over on the local happening scene of Broadway can be found many fun spots to “bar hop” such as The Fifth Element with its industrial atmosphere and great nightlife. Across the street is Malt on Broadway with a nice selection of Scotch and Bourbon and next door is Norey’s Bar and Grille, a lively bistro with a strong following.

Beer, Wine & Rum Tasting

Greenvale Vineyards located just 6 miles outside of downtown Newport in Portsmouth, offers regional wine tastings from their own family’s Victorian farm dating from 1863.

Home to Newport Storm Beer and Thomas Tew Rum, Coastal Extreme Brewing Company & Distillery uses a recipe that’s over 200 years old in their rum making methods and in doing so Coastal Extreme revived a bit of history from Newport’s rum distillery heyday when it was the rum capital of the world.

stay

Vanderbilt Grace

vanderbilt grace

Living history + legendary service = luxury reborn. That is Vanderbilt Grace‘s motto and I couldn’t agree more. Breathing new life into a Beaux-Arts style mansion formerly owned by a member of the Vanderbilt family in the Gilded Age era, Vanderbilt Grace has been transformed into a lovely 33 room boutique hotel. Just opened in mid-2012, as a guest at Vanderbilt Grace you have the best of both worlds, stepping back in time within its historically charming walls yet with all the modern-day sophistication and attention to detail you can expect from Grace Hotels. And, it’s all within minutes of Newport’s waterfront and other attractions.

The Attwater

the attwater

Since 1910, the building that now houses The Attwater has had its hand in the hospitality business. Mostly known as a bar and boarding house as well as a B & B, now the revived and most hospitable The Attwater is your home away from home. 12 perfectly furnished rooms with chic decor and pops of color, this hotel provides deluxe amenities, designer linens and is situated in the heart of Newport. Truly, The Attwater offers you a sense of place with imagination and a touch of mischief. Newport Unconventional is their tagline and I say, it’s about time for a new game in Newport. LOVE IT – Well done!

Hotel Viking

hotel viking

A classic mainstay of Newport’s landscape, Hotel Viking, also has its place in history. Hotel Viking’s doors have been open for over 80 glamourous years and has hosted many of the world’s socialites, celebrities and dignitaries in its 209 handsomely appointed rooms and suites. Situated in a prominent spot of Newport, Hotel Viking is known for its New England charm and hospitality. And, on top of it all and no pun intended, Hotel Viking offers a chill, atmospheric space with its rooftop lounge, Top of Newport.

play

Cliff Walk Stroll

Newport Coastline

This 3.5 mile path wraps along the Atlantic Ocean with its one-of-a-kind sneak peeks of Newport’s mansions is mixed with the beauty of the Rhode Island shoreline. It’s an enjoyable way to take in the oceanside while viewing the manicured grounds of mansion estates but keep in mind it can get treacherous at points and is currently being rebuilt in spots from the most recent hurricane damage.

Mansion Tour

The Breakers (Patrick O'Connor)     Marble House (John Corbett)     The Elms (John Corbett)

The glorious Newport mansions have been a part of the United States history since the early  2oth century. “Summer Cottages” acting as the playground for the wealthy summering elite, it would be criminal to visit Newport and not step inside the mansions of the glory days gone by. Cared for by the Preservation Society of Newport County, the mansions have been restored and maintained to reflect the time of their owners of the past. Even in the Wintertime, where The Breakers, The Marble House & The Elms are the lone mansions opened, you will not be disappointed. These three are the triumvirate of ultimate “golden age” living. Having once lived in Newport and spent time there visiting, I can honestly say you get a taste of the elite Americana from these three estates.

Boutique & Gourmet Shops

newport shopping

With all its glitz and glamour, of course, there’s also great shopping to be had in Newport. For a start, there is gourmet row is located on Bellevue Avenue with its wine & gourmet shops. Then there’s the name brand shops and boutiques all around Newport that make it a shoppers delight.

Set Sail

sailing

And in the warmer, seafaring weather there’s the opportunity to partake in a harbor cruise or a sunset sail. There’s plenty to choose from be it 12-metre sail or upon a famous legacy yacht with America’s Cup Charters. That’s right, yet another thing Newport is famous for, we can all experience.

Thank you Newport for keeping your history alive and for allowing us to truly experience it with all our senses.

A note of thanks to Discover Newport for arranging my visits to the mansions, Salvation Cafe & Vanderbilt Grace. I always love discovering new finds worth mentioning and if I didn’t ‘Lola Approve’ them I’d say otherwise. The views here are mine, merci beaucoup!

luxe for less – swanky stays that are budget!

yes, you read that right – luxe for less!

we all know i have “poshaholic” tastes but it isn’t always possible to stay swanky with the 4 & 5 star price tags! well, since i’ve discovered HostelBookers, the budget travel specialists, my desire to take off on whim has become more of a reality! now i can direct my itchy feet to great, yet cheap, luxury hotels in my favorite destinations like London, NYC, Bangkok and Berlin. come take a gander at what i mean.

Comfort Inn Brooklyn Cruise Terminal - New York

Comfort Inn Brooklyn Cruise Terminal

as much as i like to shop, eat and play in Manhattan, i find those exorbitant room prices disturb my beauty sleep, so i was delighted to discover this sparkling new hotel with incredibly reasonable rates only eight minutes away from the shiniest part of the Big Apple! the rooms are simple, but sweet, with the little flourishes like crystal bedside lamps, sleek computer desks with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen satellite TVs and personal coffee/tea stations. after my complimentary breakfast, i can set out for Manhattan by either taking quick taxi ride through the Battery Tunnel, hopping on the local subway at Carroll Street or climbing aboard the ferry at the Cruise Terminal. i love to come back to Brooklyn around sunset to ride the bus down Van Brunt Street to admire the view from the romantic Pier 44 Waterfront Garden before i return to my room to dress for my evening escapades.

Best Western Palm- London

Best Western Palm Hotel

when i want to go incognito a few days, i fly into London’s Luton Airport and grab the train to this darling neighborhood hotel from HostelBookers that’s become my haven when i need to replenish my party-weary soul. the spacious, ultra-modern rooms have stylistic touches like sexy glass showers, dreamy inset lighting and crisp cappuccino-colored curtains. i like the top story rooms best because of the interesting skylights in the bathroom and over the computer station. with their 24-hour reception desk and round-the-clock room service, i relish slipping in during the wee hours so i can add that dash of intrigue to my real world escape. when, and if, i want to leave my cozy little sanctuary, i can walk over to the Golders Green Underground Station, checking out the current status of the historical Hippodrome, before heading out to explore Central London in my best incognito disguise.

Hoppegarten - Berlin

Hotel Hoppegarten Berlin

every so often i hear the call of the wild, but don’t want to stray too far from the cosmopolitan action, so i head for this classy little fringe hotel that gives me the best of both worlds.  although the hotel is surrounded by luscious nature reserves, Berlin’s city center, Alexanderplatz, is only a 15-minute drive away. the stylish lobby, bar and restaurant are embellished with multicultural touches that accommodate an eclectic range of tourists, making it one of my favorite Berlin hangouts. i do love to take solitary walks and stretch my legs in the Erpetal Nature Reserve to see the little streams flanked by wildflowers. i also love to dress up and head over to the nearby Galopprennbahn Hoppegarten race track to indulge in some highbrow leisure-time and sporting events.

Best Western Mayfair Suites- Bangkok

Best Western Mayfair Suites

the international flavor of this Bangkok hotel exemplifies the perfect blend of proper pampering and cultural immersion and the sleek décor of the ultra-modern lobby emphasizes that exotic minimalist beauty that draws me to the Orient. i begin with a workout in their beautifully equipped gym, followed by a long, soaking bath in my private tub before pillaging my mini-fridge for leftovers and my fully stocked mini-bar for treats. since i can walk to Bangkok’s Pratunam shopping district, i’ve prowled it at all hours and discovered that some of the juiciest deals are available at the Night Market on Ratchawithi Road.

my controversial musings for 2012

things i wonder?! what is controversial? what is weird? what is normal??

what is normal?

when facing a new year, you start to reflect on the one ending. my last year -2012- was amazing but not without controversy.

i’ll start with this: i live in a candy colored perfect world almost all the time.

YES, i’m lola & my favorite color is pink!

lola

BUT seriously, i live in a bubble & i ABSOLUTELY LOVE to get out of it and find the nitty gritty real world.

WHY? because it’s where most people live.

i know i’m lucky. i’m happy to return to the bubble BUT only temporarily. it’s not reality. it’s not where life is really happening. sorry friends if i offend.

habitat cambodia

this year has been one of my very best because i pushed my limits and you know what, i pushed yours too. who sets the rules? why are they set? who cares why? isn’t it better to learn from the challenges? isn’t better to know what else is out there and why we’re lucky? or how we are short-falling ourselves???

how can you judge me for wanting to know? how can you judge me for sharing with you what else is out there? i often wonder…don’t you want to know? aren’t you curious how the world gets on in other places?

lola-antoinette

is this too deep for you because it’s me, lola, saying it? or are you actually reading it??

i want you to know something. when people ask me what i do when i’m away traveling, no one says “oh well, how do you do that?!” OR “you have a tolerant family” they don’t think to themselves or whisper to others that something *MUST* be wrong to wish to travel so much.

real friends

NO, they actually treat what i do as a real profession and me as a person who should be able to go out into the world and do what it is i love. they don’t impress upon me rules. maybe it’s because they’re strangers. even still, i appreciate the response. the lack of judgement.

i’m especially embarrassed to say that the biggest judgers are women. and not ignorant women BUT women who should know better. these women treat me as if i should be living the life of a “traditional” woman. whatever that is. SHAME. ON. YOU. no wonder we haven’t advanced that much. we are our own worst enemies. almost NO men have said something indicating i’m making bad life choices. almost 100% of the negative feedback is from women. why?! because men know that the world is an oyster and it’s for the taking.

my life

what am i trying to say here? many things. ladies, stop being so mean to your own kind. just because someone is doing something different doesn’t mean it’s wrong. AND!!! is it your business anyway? i wonder?? i’m guessing NO NO NO!

it's your story

what else am i saying? GO. FOR. IT. don’t stop dreaming! despite my hurt feelings at people’s judgements this past year, my pushing myself has brought ME much happiness. I HAVE created something viable of my very own & i LOVE what i do!

so nanny nanny boo boo!

AND don’t expect 2013 to look ANY different. BIGGER BOLDER BETTER!
