my favorite activity of my 30 day Eurotour

a tale of a lady & the puppet

marionette

every day of my 30 days in Europe was amazing. in total, only one day was an “off” day, meaning no real plans. AND, even then, something fun happened. that month was kismet. perfection. SO, it’s difficult to pick one activity that i really loved more than another.

BUT, i was indulged. i seized the opportunity to do something i reallllly wanted to do. my favorite activity in all of my 30 days was making my make my own look-alike marionette doll in Prague – a city well-known for its marionette making & puppeteering. please, don’t misunderstand. i know some of them look freaky but my little clone doesn’t. she’s cute!

photo 1-15

anyhow…there i was, planning the trip and all the things i had on my wish list. while i was researching i came across Truhlar Marionety as THE place to take workshops on marionette making in Prague. as i closed in on the 30 day tour and was firming things up, i decided to ask the Four Seasons Prague if Truhlar Marionety was truly the place for making puppets and they verified yes. so, then & there, it was decided and a workshop was booked.

photo 5

so why is this my favorite activity? well, on a Thursday morning i showed up at the Truhlar studio for my class. i didn’t realize i was in for a 4 hour lesson but the time flew by. it was a very well thought out procedure for getting one into visualizing and actually making your own marionette. even though i fancy myself as a creative type, i found it challenging yet SO SO FUN. completely hand-made, the end result was truly rewarding as you knew you crafted the entire look of the doll yourself. the PR & marketing director was leading the workshop and the master craftsman, Pavel, (20 years in the biz) assembled my girl. how cool is that? when they could see my affinity with the pink boa they suggested adding that to my Lola marionette. i can get behind anyone who endorses the boa factor – yes, indeed. my day was so much fun and it was evident from all the smiles in the room including my Lola puppet. how could this not be my favorite activity?!

photo copy 9

BONUS is, this is my one Prague souvenir and it cost a grand total of $60. talk about a bargain for 4 hours of learning, laughing and creating a memory plus a keepsake to bring home. it is a day i will never forget. it’s alway enjoyable to participate in my little indulgences but this one kinda took the cake. it was more fun than i hoped and more learning than i expected. i have my Lola marionette to remember Prague by but i also know more about the puppet making process as a whole and now have an additional respect for the masters who make them.

photo copy 8

it’s a puppets tale with an almost happy ending. my Lola marionette needs a boyfriend so my next challenge is to make it back to Prague to get (i mean make) that girl a date!

Staying Hip at Swiss Luxury Apartments – Geneva, Switzerland

Swiss Luxe that’s a Must

Moonrise over Lake Geneva

Moonrise over Lake Geneva

Do you know what Geneva is famous for? Chocolate, watches and banking. Know what else? It’s said to be a bit boring and stuffy. I dropped in on Geneva on a Saturday night and, yes, it was a bit quiet. All the locals head off to the nearby ski slopes in the winter and all the business people have returned to their prospective locales. Since it’s a city that caters to the business set, I could see how Geneva could be seen as potentially boring and stodgy. But guess what? You don’t have to stay somewhere that epitomizes that.

swiss luxury apartments

Newcomer Swiss Luxury Apartments offers you a sleek, hip and luxurious place to rest your head with all the conveniences of a hotel. Housed in a fully renovated historical building that was once a private home, Swiss Luxury Apartments is located in the center of Geneva just around the corner from Lake Geneva, the famous Jet d’Eau fountain and many of the city’s best restaurants & nightlife.

swiss luxury apartments

When you stay with Swiss Luxury Apartments you can choose between two-room and three-room suites that come with a fully equipped kitchen. This makes it even more convenient to eat and drink whatever you want whenever you wish! Don’t have time to do your laundry or food shopping? No problem, the on-site staff is there to help and can arrange this at an additional fee. Besides the daily cleaning of your suite, other benefits to staying with Swiss Luxury Apartments include greater privacy, cost-effectiveness and more spacious accommodations. In particular, Lola liked the complimentary WiFi, Nespresso coffee maker & divine Frette linens! I can see how Swiss Luxury Apartments would be perfect for friends or family traveling together or the modern business person requiring more space.

Gorgeous flowers for Lola & her friends – Perfect personal touch!!

There’s also great flexibility in staying with Swiss Luxury Apartments as you can choose a one night stay or stay up to several months. With rates starting at $650 Swiss Francs per night – the bonus in that is the longer you stay the less you pay per night. FAB! I mean who wouldn’t want to stay in a place that’s as comfortable as home but with many of the same services of a hotel?lola_blackpink

A big MERCI BEAUCOUP to Swiss Luxury Apartments for hosting my stay in Geneva. I loved it so much that I would definitely choose to stay there again! As you must know, if I didn’t tres adore it, I wouldn’t ‘Lola Approve’ it. The views here are mine!

a Negroni cocktail history lesson

Negroni 101 – in its birthplace – Florence, Italy

negroni

it’s no secret. i love my cocktails and i’ve been having a love affair with Negronis for some time now. little did i know, i was traveling to its homeland, the location of the creation of my cocktail of choice, this past fall. when i walked into the Atrium Bar at Four Seasons Florence, i had no clue i’d be learning Negroni history and sample tastings that evening. boy was i in for a major treat getting to experience it first hand.

so, there i was in a loungy bar in the beautiful Four Seasons Florence being served by the handsome, Luca, head bartender and winner of the prestigious “Italian Barman of the Year 2012”. not too shabby for a cocktail lover. to top it off, this ultra cool bar also has its own Negroni cart where they mix you whatever Negroni version you prefer right there at your table side. LOVE!

negroni cart

while Luca did his mixing magic he told the story of how Negroni was born in Florence in 1920. at that time, the cocktail ‘Americano’ was very popular. a particular Italian playboy, Count Camillo Negroni, wanted the barman at Cafe Casoni to add gin to the concoction & thus, the drink took on the name Negroni.

luca

now for the fun stuff. ‘Americano’ is 1/2 Campari & 1/2 vermouth. Negroni is 1/3 gin, 1/3 Campari & 1/3 vermouth. Luca didn’t mix-master any old typical Negroni, however, he made 3 versions.

ONE was known as Old Style, a variation of Negroni using the oldest products out there. Beefeater Gin from 1820, Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth from 1786 & China Clementi Bitter from 1884, garnished with an orange peel.

two negroni

TWO was called Valentino and is a combination of Hendricks Gin, Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth & Campari, garnished with a cucumber slice and an orange peel.

one negroni

THREE was Camillo, the namesake of the inventor, made with gin, white port & Prato Vermouth, garnished with an orange slice and caper berries.

three negroni

A note of thanks to Four Seasons Florence for hosting my Negroni history lesson & tasting as well as other cocktail treats and eats. my taste buds were delighted and if i didn’t ‘Lola Approve’ it i’d say otherwise. the views here are mine, grazie! lola_blackpink

5 survival secrets for staying in an Ice Hotel

Lola stayed in an Ice Hotel

Front Page Gallery- Snow Village

i know what you’re thinking…there’s NO WAY lola can do it. sleeping overnight in an environment that is between 23 and 32 degrees fahrenheit. it may not sound very appealing to some but i’m here to say it’s a heck of a lot of FUN. especially with the right company!

31465_10151235633846601_1738422880_n

here are a few of my survival tips for getting through the night so you too can have a kick ass survival certificate – i mean, only if you care about that kind of thing!

Uno Numero – Proper Attire

IMAG0364

no, i’m not talking about a black tie affair or your debutant ball. i’m talking long underwear, wool socks & a warm beanie. i’m talking layers and neck gators. i’m talking bring a blanket and wear it as a wrap. plan for it to be very cold. over exaggerate – you can always remove layers.

Dos – Jager Shots

photo 2-10

i’ll be the first to tell you that Jagermeister is a vile drink. having said that, in the very COLD environment of an igloo Ice Hotel, well, it completely works. it actually doesn’t taste horrible. it tastes good. really good. bottom line, take shots & get tipsy. teetotalers, sorry you may be cold.

Tres – Good Dance Mix

IMAG0363

it’s ALWAYS advisable to have a good dance mix on your device. you never know when you may need this. this truth was my reality last week in the Ice Hotel. when the DJ’s iPhone lost all its juice it seemed the party was over. move over & enter DJ Pinkie Rox! boom boom YEAH. my advice, always have a Flo Rida tune on your mix. everyone’s happy & you’ll work up a mild increase in your body temp dancing.

Cuatro – Flask of Booze

photo 1-12

i wasn’t a girl scout or anything but i’ve watched enough tv shows & movies in my time that i know a flask of alcohol should be nearby in freezing situations. i mean, c’mon, why did St Bernard dogs carry a barrel of brandy then?! i kept my flask tucked under my pillow for that “just in case” moment! honestly, i snuck a couple of sips. i’m sure that’s really no surprise.

Cinco – Sandwiches

IMAG0369

no, i’m not talking a midnight snack in the sub-temps. i’m talking bodies smushed together to make a human sandwich. hey, it’s just good common sense…body heat & all that jazz. don’t get overly excited though. it was completely PG. everyone had their own individual thermal sleeping bags supplied by the Ice Hotel that are made to protect from extreme cold.

DISCLAIMER – staying in an Ice Hotel is something i would completely do again but apparently not everyone knew about my survival secrets and didn’t make it though the night. it’s essential to be prepared to be cold & pick the right travel companions!

THANK YOU to Snow Village Canada, InterContinental Montreal Hotel & Montreal Tourism Board for making this overnight experience extra special!

The Great Escape – Verbier, Switzerland Edition

thegreatescape

Welcome to Verbier St-Bernard – One of Europe’s Premier Ski Resorts

Verbier St-Bernard is a winning combination for a winter ‘Great Escape’ being known for its extensive and reliable skiing as well as a town to match with lively nightlife and wonderful restaurants.  Verbier is part of the extensive 4 Vallees network of ski resorts and offers an abundance of activities for both the sport’s enthusiast or spa goer. It is undoubtedly one of the greatest playgrounds in the Alps.

408553_594346040582581_201450472_n

Although Verbier is becoming better known all the time, it still remains as it’s always been, an understated, charming alpine village that’s designed for the passionate. Verbier has over 250 miles of ski runs which makes the “4 Vallees” the largest ski area in Switzerland. Just 1.75 hours from Geneva and 3 hours from Zurich, Verbier can be easily accessed by the amazing and efficient Swiss rail system. Obviously, the wintertime may be the best time to visit Verbier St-Bernard, but there’s something for everyone in all four seasons with its mountain biking, golfing, horseback riding and even cultural events like the Verbier Festival where international classical music greats come together for a 17 day long festival.

eat

La Vache

LA VACHE

La Vache (meaning COW) is new on the Verbier scene and offers a great menu with local favorites, pizzas & a to-die-for burger all at very un-Swiss mountain resort prices. In a partnership with Farinet, Lawrence Dallaglio (famous English rugby player), James Blunt (of musical fame) and Carl Fogarty (world superbike champion), the group has completely renovated a restaurant in the heart of the ski runs.  La Vache is decorated with fur skins, old wood and antiques and may be the best spot to hang out and enjoy an exceptional panoramic view.

Le Caveau

photo 3-4

If you’re looking for good traditional Swiss food at an affordable price, Le Caveau is your spot. The cheese fondue and raclette are their specialties and, I say, when in Switzerland do as the Swiss do! It is a good idea to make a reservation because of its pricing, central location and popularity.

La Cordée Restaurant

CDA-Restaurant

Another newcomer to Verbier, La Cordée des Alpes’ intimate restaurant has a menu of seasonal local and fresh food. La Cordée’s stylish bar offers delicious hand crafted cocktails in a welcoming, chic space for apres-ski or pre-dinner drinks. This is definitely a see and be seen destination. Lola loved the detailed woodwork and gorgeous louvered shutters!

drink

Apres-Ski

1936 Bar

As much as skiing is a part of your winter holiday in Verbier, so is the apres-ski scene. It all starts as you make your way down the mountain. One stop along the way should be Bar 1936, located on the run from ‘les Ruinettes’ to Verbier. Mingle with ski instructors & fellow skiers over a hot wine or cold brew.

le rouge

Next stop at the foot of the ‘le Rouge’ run is Le Rouge Restaurant & Club. With its ski in, ski out links, Le Rouge’s environment is casual cool without any of the stuffiness. Whether you go for lunch, dinner or apres-ski drinks, it is a “must do” destination for visitors and residents of Verbier alike.

Bar Hopping

farinet lounge02

After a day on the slopes and an afternoon of apres-ski, the crowd moves on next to the Farinet Lounge Bar. Farinet has a fantastic selection of cocktails, wines & champagnes. People  typically party here with the DJ’s from 10pm to 1am.

casbah11

For the late night crowd there’s The Casbah, opening up at 11pm. There is something for everyone at the Casbah with its “Rockbah” playing pop-rock music or just getting down on the Club Dance Floor. DJ’s perform there every Saturday night from 1am until 4am.

stay

Le Chalet de Flore

chalet de flore

Le Chalet de Flore is a brand new beautiful, 20 room boutique hotel right in the heart of Verbier village that offers a central, quiet location with a view of the Alpine panorama. Chalet de Flore is a charming luxury 4-star hotel that is only a few minutes walk to the Medran lifts as well as the best restaurants & boutiques. As sister property to Chalet d’Adrien, Chalet de Flore is linked daily by a shuttle bus allowing guests to have full access to the spa and gym at the Chalet d’Adrien. Guests also have priority at the restaurants and benefit from all services at the Relais & Châteaux member establishment. Lola’s favorite thing at Chalet de Flore was the cozy Le Bar.

La Cordée des Alpes

hotel3

Opened just this past December, Hotel Cordée des Alpes is 4-star property and member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World with 34 guest rooms and suites. You’ll feel right at home at this cozy, welcoming boutique property, decorated in sleek Swiss chic and a mix of old-school ski design elements. With an indoor pool, fitness room and lovely spa also on property, you may find it hard to leave  the sanctuary of Cordée des Alpes. To top it all off, their motto is service that reflects a passion for excellence. Tres bon!

Le Chalet d’Adrien

photo 1-12

Le Chalet d’Adrien, known as one of Verbier’s finest hotels, is a 5-star property and a member of the ooo lala Relais & Chateaux family. Chalet d’Adrien’s a charming luxury hotel, offering 20 rooms & 9 suites with an unrestricted view of Verbier and is located at the foot of the ski slopes. If you need to let off a little steam or recuperate from a day of skiing, Chalet d’Adrien has a spa, fitness center and indoor pool on property. The Michelin starred restaurant, Le Table d’Adrien, can also be found here.

Skiing

image

If you are visiting Verbier in the winter, chances are you’ve come to ski. With over 250 miles of ski runs in the “4 Vallees”, one could ski for days and not repeat too much. It’s also a perfect opportunity to take some lessons and work on some new ski skills. Warren Smith Ski Academy, led by Warren himself who is one of Britain’s leading professional freeskiers and an Internationally Certified Performance Coach and Ski Instructor, is the BEST place to go. The Ski Academy works with all levels of skiers offering private or group private lessons as well as 5 day long courses. I can vouch for the patience and persistence of my group private lesson and how my confidence was strengthened in just a few short hours on the slopes. It doesn’t hurt that the instructors are some of the friendliest and most fun out there!

Spa Day

cordee spa

If you need a break from the slopes or some rejuvenation, you’ll find many different options here in Verbier at a variety of spas to choose from. As previously mentioned, both Le Chalet d’Adrien and Hotel Cordée des Alpes have lovely spas on the premises and offer an array of treatments to pamper yourself. Another option is Chilali, a professional mobile massage service that offers treatments in the comfort of your hotel or private chalet. Quite handy if you don’t feel like going anywhere!

Shopping

photo_exterieure_xtreme_small

Even though Verbier is mostly understated glamour there is definitely good shopping to be had here. Obviously, the number one thing found here is a plethora of ski gear and equipment stores! While the branded stores like The North Face & Patagonia are represented here, for the best variety head over to Xtreme Sports Ski Boutique where you’ll find a large selection of skiing/snowboarding equipment and the best bargains. If you are looking for something of a local nature you can find Swiss items and handicrafts typical of the Valais region at Bagn’Art.

A note of thanks to Verbier St-Bernard for arranging the #GirlsSwissAdventure visits to the La Cordee, La Vache & Le Caveau restaurants, ski equipment rentals from Philippe Roux, ski passes and lessons with Warren Smith Ski Academy. AND, finally, the lovely sleep at Le Chalet de Flore.

And to Switzerland Tourism for the first class SWISS train pass. It’s the *BEST* way to travel in Switzerland!

My visit to Verbier was beyond my expectations of FABULOUS and if I didn’t ‘Lola Approve’ it I’d say otherwise. The views here are mine, merci beaucoup!
