going local in Costa Brava – Spain

Lola loves Costa Brava

Cadaques - i love it!

Cadaques – i love it!

i’ll be honest, i think i’m more of a hotel travel girl than a house rental gal. having said that, there have been many occasions where it made more sense to rent a house. whether it was the economics of the situation or the options available, it was THE WAY to go. this definitely seems to be the case with Costa Brava, Spain as well.

while there are hotels in the various beach towns and medieval villages there are many amazing villa options to choose from and my guess is it’s also a more economical way to go for a longer stay, using the property as a home base from which to explore.

gorgeous Besalu

there are other brilliant benefits to staying in villa beyond economics. for me, number ONE is the fact that you are forced to have a more local experience and i think this is awesome! because you have a kitchen, you will have to go to the market or if you choose to not always cook then you will dine out amongst the townspeople. another option that i’ve had the good fortune to experience is bringing in local chefs to prepare meals. with a home stay, one is able to have all these options and i really recommend this combination if you have the opportunity.

during my Costa Brava tour i stayed at three different properties, in different towns and had three wonderful and different experiences! let me tell you more about them to give you a picture of what staying in a private home can be like with Charming Villas Catalonia.

Cadaques

Sa Costa

Sa Costa

Sa Costa is a gorgeous seaside villa i stayed in while visiting Cadaques, Spain. located right on the sea, Sa Costa has direct beach access and views across the water to the stunning small fishing village with just over 2,500 year round inhabitants. in the summertime the population can grow to upwards of 25,000.

things found at Dali’s home turned museum

1 hour from Girona and 2 hours from Barcelona, Cadaques is in the middle of the Cap de Creus peninsula and has a famous history with many artists, most importantly Salvador Dali, whose home turned museum is nearby. another famous sight worth seeing is the unique 17th century sea-faring church, Santa Maria. i particularly enjoyed the sailors & ships mixed in with the traditional symbols of Christianity. as for local charms, having dinner in town at MOS and dancing with one of the owners was definitely a highlight.

Celler Martin Faixo

Celler Martin Faixo

AND the Mayor of Cadaques joined the dinner party during my final meal at the outstanding Compartir, started by 3 El Bulli veterans. (now closed, El Bulli was once the #1 restaurant in the world). other local treats were bringing private chef Lee Pennington to Sa Costa to cook dinner and a family lunch at the vineyard home of Celler Martin Faixo. two things i will never forget. Sa Costa has 6 beds & baths and can accommodate 12. this wonderfully appointed villa has floor to ceiling windows to take in the sea views, a private pool and its own sea pier for boating activities.

Sant Mori

Castell de Rocaberti

Castell de Rocaberti

Castell de Rocaberti is a 15th century castle located in the heart of the small Catalan village. the charming village of Sant Mori is halfway between Girona & Figueres, each about 20 minutes away. with its 15 bedrooms and 13 baths, Castell de Rocaberti can accommodate up to 30 guests and is truly ideal for a family reunion or professional retreat. over the years the Castle has welcomed royals such as Fernando the Catholic, who would marry Isabel and sponsor Christopher Columbus’ voyage where he discovered America. pretty amazing to be able to stay within the walls of such a historic place with all of today’s modern amenities.

my Girona

my Girona

daytrips from Sant Mori to Girona and Empuriabrava were easy for further exploration of these areas. in the Empuriabrava area you can find one of the largest marinas in the world, a medieval village complete with an impressive gothic church and prison, and a gorgeous wild life reserve, Aiguamolis, for the nature lovers out there. in Girona, known as the capital of Costa Brava, you’ll find a bigger bustling city that still has a medieval feel. things to see & do there include the ‘Old Town’ and Cathedral.

El Celler de Can Roca

El Celler de Can Roca

i was lucky enough to tour the now #1 restaurant in the world, El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, and have an outstanding lunch at La Calendula where the owner tailor-made a menu for the day. another local experience was the evening a chef was brought in to prepare paella and the castle owner remained and dined as well. i got to hear stories of his family and the castle that has been a part of their heritage since the 15th century. so fascinating and fun!

Besalu

Sant Ferriol

Sant Ferriol

Sant Ferriol is an incredible 18th century farmhouse that has been lovingly restored and furnished with gorgeous country antiques. don’t misunderstand though, this is not a stuffy home – rather a very comfy one that you will wish to never leave. Sant Ferriol has all the modern amenities you could imagine with all the charm of a rustic farmhouse. sleeping up to 26, the villa has 12 beds and baths. i particularly loved the huge pool and pool house with its own cooking and eating area – perfect for outdoor entertaining. the natural outdoor surroundings make you feel miles away from things, yet it’s located 5 minutes from the lively medieval village of Besalu and 25 minutes from Girona.

calcots & paella - mmm

calcots & paella – mmm

during my quick day & a half at Sant Ferriol, some local things i was able to enjoy was the chance to go up in a hot air balloon with Vol de Coloms – very popular for this volcanic region of Costa Brava. sadly, it was too windy to actually take flight. while taking in the outdoor space at the villa, i was served a traditional meal of Calcots, which are a variety of large scallions that are absolutely delicious when charcoal grilled. in the evening another local chef, Jordi, from I cook It came to the house to make more Catalan specialties like fish soup & paella – YUM! the villa of Sant Ferriol has caretakers on property as well in their own annexed cottage. so wonderful to know someone is there to assist with any of your needs and spending time with them over dinner my last night was even more charming than the farmhouse.

i was the very fortunate invited guest of Charming Villas Catalonia and could not picture a better sampling of what they offer in homes and villa rentals. Charming Villas specializes in top quality rentals with a personal touch from start to finish and offers assistance in trip planning & arrangements as well. i will definitely rent with them in my future travels to Costa Brava, to be sure, as they are completely Lola Approved!

Ultra Music Festival – Miami Edition

It’s supercalafragilistic ULTRA!

I’m super psyched to have a guest post today by none other than Roxy, my awesome star of an assistant! I asked Roxy to write up a little intro into Ultra because 1) she went 2) I’ve always been curious because I’m often in Miami when the festival is going on 3) it’s likely I’ll be attending Ultra in Croatia in July so I wanted to know a bit more about what I’d be in for!

Thanks Roxy for this amazing “what to expect” insight into Ultra Music Festival!

Screen Shot 2013-05-14 at 9.06.46 PM

The Ultra Music Festival is a showcase for some of the most amazing EDM (electronic dance music, if you don’t already know) DJ’s, artists, and performers. Each show “brings it” and leaves you wanting more. The scope and number of shows Ultra offers is fantastic and will leave you sprinting around trying to see as many as you can. The production and staging at Ultra is phenomenal and will shock and even amaze you. This in combination with the suburb music offers you a mind-blowing experience. From the intense mixes and performances to the lasers, lights, fireworks, and other special effects, Ultra exceeds expectations.

By the Numbers

This 15th anniversary for the Ultra Musical Festival in 2013 amped up the volume. The festival was over two weekends this year – a first for the event, and had a total of 330,000 attendees. That’s about 167,000 people each weekend. Tickets ranged from $150 for early bird tickets up to about $1500 for a VIP ticket to both weekends. Over 200 new and world-famous artists, performers, and DJ’s took the stage in the middle of downtown Miami at Bayfront Park for a combined 32 hours a weekend.

People. So. Many. People.

Screen Shot 2013-05-14 at 9.06.05 PM

It is a world-famous electronic music festival, so yes, be prepared for the masses of characters you’ll be sharing your experience with. Spring breakers, high schoolers, ravers with their fur boots and mesh, internationals toting their countries’ flags, bros, EDM die hards, and people of all ages just looking for a good time are who you’ll be rubbing elbows with- or more so who will be invading your personal bubble. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s a festival and meeting all kinds of people is part of the fun! We met a bunch of internationals (80 different countries were represented!) running around with their countries flags. My friend expanded her candy collection with the help of several rave girls. For those of you who do not know, a candy is a beaded bracelet, basically like the ones you made in kindergarten, and you can exchange candies through, I guess the best way to describe it is like a handshake. But it is all about PLUR (peace, love, unity, respect), and it’s like a mantra for raves and the like, so if you see people with lots of beaded bracelets that’s what’s going on. We also met bros of all ages and even a New York fashion blogger. I will caution, however, that Ultra has no age restriction (which I would strongly urge them to reconsider) so beware of the inappropriately dressed 14 year olds with acne and braces that may cross your path.

Watch Where You’re Standing!

As with anything, it’s all about the people you’re with who make your experience, so choose your spot wisely when enjoying a show. Having some drunk 6ft tall guy behind you constantly jumping into you and spilling his beer all over you gets annoying. Many times it’s the luck of the draw, but I would recommend trying to situate yourself on the sides – people come and go and are in and out pushing past you everywhere – but less so on the side of the crowd. I like to be in the crowd with everyone around me as excited as I am, but not too far in as I’m a big fan of personal space and also I’m only 5’2. Someone’s fist pump usually ends with an elbow to my head. But there is usually lots of space at each stage area during the day, so if being in the crowd isn’t your thing you can certainly hang out in the back where there’s lots of room and you can even sit (if you dare). If you really love your space and are looking for a great view, I would highly recommend getting a VIP pass. For some of the big shows, especially the main stage performances, being elevated in the VIP section would certainly be worth it if you can afford it!

Wait? Which Stage Again?

Screen Shot 2013-05-14 at 9.07.20 PM

This year, there were seven stages throughout Bayfront Park. The walk from stage to stage is short, only a few minutes tops, so rushing from stage to stage to see the next act on your list isn’t too difficult. One thing to mention is that the names of the stages change each day. My friends and I didn’t realize that and were scratching our heads trying to figure out where to go.  Eventually we realized that it was the same stage they were just calling it something different. On Saturday we were at Ultra Europe, and then next day the same stage was Ultra Chile. Unnecessary and confusing; especially for those under the influence. Not really sure why they changed the names, but I will tell you without the help of my Ultra Music Festival App we would have been lost! The main stage has some of the biggest performers, but I thought the experience at some of the other stages, specifically Ultra Europe and the Megastructure, were far better. There were smaller crowds and the atmosphere was much friendlier. Also having the LED screens overhead was fun and having the smoke fill the space was cooling and had great effects. We were lucky enough to see Tiesto and Alesso, two of my favorites at the megastructure stage on Sunday.

What to Bring

Screen Shot 2013-05-14 at 9.06.30 PM

If someone were to ask me what to bring to Ultra, first thing I will tell you is a camelbak. If you don’t know, which I did not prior to my Ultra prep, a camelbak is a backpack with a big water pouch in it. It has a tube and a mouthpiece to drink from while you wear it. I think it is supposed to be used for hiking. This camelbak will not only be your saving grace in times of dire thirst, but it will also save you a pretty penny and help keep up your stamina and hydration throughout the day. Ultra does not allow any outside food or water. And naturally, water bottles cost an arm and a leg and many times the long lines are exhausting enough. My friend and I shared a camelbak and the first two days we were allowed to have water already in it and enter the park which was fantastic. The security at Ultra gets stricter day by day. Friday is pretty much a free for all and as long as you aren’t obvious you can take in what you want, by Sunday though, we had to dump out our water in the camelbak before we went in, and even some horse head masks were being turned away by security. Regardless, having a lot of water on you during the hot Miami heat is great and will also make you many friends who did not think to buy their own camelbak. We were told that there would be water stations for us to fill up our camelbaks at, however the water stations only miraculously popped up on Sunday… It ended up being okay because we just filled up our pack in the bathroom (yes there is a real bathroom and yes I would HIGHLY recommend using that one throughout the day – at night not so sure if the long line is worth it). The massive amounts of body heat, Miami heat, dancing, alcohol and whatever else strikes your fancy at Ultra will dehydrate you quickly, so if you are planning on being at Ultra for more than just a few hours stay hydrated! There’s nothing worse than not being able to enjoy yourself at such a great event!

I would also suggest wearing a fanny pack. I actually enjoy the hipster trend, but I know the thought of a fanny pack horrifies some people, so a small cross body bag you can hold while walking through the crowd will do. Pickpocketing was huge (though many girls were in denial and insisted they had dropped their belongings on the ground), and so as much as a fanny pack might not be your style, I am just warning you to beware of putting your stuff in backpacks! Glow sticks, sunglasses are a must, as well as sunscreen, granola bars if you can sneak them in, travel wipes or Kleenex – we brought them for the port-o-potties and TRUST you will be wanting them, along with that some hand sanitizer, obviously your ticket and ID, cash because the ATM fees are outrageous and the line is crazy long, bring your schedule of who you want to see and what stage they are on, and last but not least bring your patience. You will encounter lines and people and more people but it is all totally worth it!

What to Wear

Pretty much anything goes at Ultra. I opted for crop tops and hot pink pants, while others opted for pasties and a pair of the free underwear you get a Victoria’s Secret and nothing else. There was tons of neon and pinnies, bathing suits, there were horse head masks, head pieces, crazy wigs, superman thongs, power ranger costumes, lots of tutus and fairy wings, even the Mario Brothers entourage, and of course some deadmau5 heads which look kind of like mickey mouse heads if you haven’t seen one before. It’s fun to get creative with what you wear! Just remember to go comfortable, its hot, you’ll be dancing, and rubbing against people for hours on end! A pair of beat up sneakers is the way to go, they may not be as cute but how comfortable can fur boots be for eight hours in the hot Miami heat?

Bringing People and Music Together

Screen Shot 2013-05-14 at 9.07.39 PM

What is great about Ultra is that is brings all types of music and all kinds of people together. The diversity encompassed in such a great atmosphere is what is really amazing about the festival. Also, the DJ’s use Ultra to showcase their new music and build off one another’s energy and drive to give great performances. We saw one of Swedish House Mafia’s last performances and that alone surpassed my expectations! The crowd, the music, the visuals, it all makes for thrilling experience that Ultra maintains throughout the three days. Mark your calendars! The Ultra Music Festival will be back in Miami March 28, 29 and 30, 2014!

CABO SAN LUCAS

Screen Shot 2013-04-27 at 3.23.53 PM

When I head to Cabo I’ll be staying at the beautiful Bahia Hotel & Beach Club. Not only will I be poolside but most definitely will be spending time at their beach club as well as the legendary Nikki Beach, which is next door. So, what does one wear for lots of beach-filled days in Mexico? These are two styles I’m debating by L*SPACE & Mar de Rosas along with a hot embellished cover up! Viva la Mexico!

MYKONOS

swimming pool and sunloungers - gm38_a1e6518(1).fsp_detail

I’m going to Italy in early July and hope to extend and go over to Greece to visit Mykonos. Why? Well, even though I’ve been to Greece it just wasn’t enough time and I really NEED to check Mykonos out. One of my favorite hotel brands, Grace Hotels, has a gorgeous property on Mykonos. Not only do I want spend time at the pool and on the beach but I also think I might need some relaxation time in their boutique spa. So, naturally, I need swimwear suitable for all of these things. What do you think of these options of Sabz Luxury or Aguaclara? They shout out goddess to me – perfect for Greece!

VEGAS

azure-pool-1

Can you believe Lola has yet to experience the pool party fun of Vegas? Yeah, me either. Well, my number one go-to source, Vegas Chatter tells me the BEST place for a sophisticated (read non-cheesy) pool party is Azure over at The Palazzo. I’ve actually stayed at The Palazzo and definitely agree that it’s a classy joint. So why not give it a go?! For some reason, Vegas always conjures up shiny, sparkly, metallic images in my mind. I think these bikini numbers and sexy coverup by Vitamin A fit the bill quite nicely, NO?!

vegas

Which one(s) will I choose? I think it’s going to be a tough decision with so many choices AND I haven’t even stepped into the store! Watch my Instagram account as I show you some of the options I try in Miami. Wish me luck in my shopping endeavors and, of course, I wish you luck in your possible win of a FANTASTIC $200 gift card prize to The Orchid Boutique.

XO – Lola

how i traveled to five major cities in 18 hours

and not just 5 cities – five major cities in four countries!

number-5-pinata

on my way to Spain in March i ran into some trouble. for one, there was a massive overnight snowstorm on the East Coast that waylaid everything. at first, this actually seemed to be a good thing as i underestimated time to clear off my car and drive the snowy roads of Massachusetts. i was terribly relieved to find out my flight was delayed. once i got settled at the airport, however, it became evident it was going to be so delayed that i would miss my connection in NYC direct to Barcelona. (now you see where i’m going with this, right?!)

once in NYC i was told i was being re-routed now through London. GREAT! Heathrow. the roughest security on earth. plus, i brought my €’s not my £’s for the airport. moving on. what about my bag?! i was told some kind of airline mumbo-jumbo term for “we’ll call and tell them you’re changing carriers and to pull your bag”. fingers crossed i ever see that bag again…

photo 1-17

what’s this? Lola wasn’t supposed to be over this land mass!!

so off i go from NYC to London. once i land in London and make my to the next security check point (UGH) they won’t let me continue on. WHY? there’s no way i’ll make my next connection. SO…go stand in another airline ticket line. get told there are no more directs on their carrier and you’re switching to another and being routed through Amsterdam!! SERIOUSLY…goodbye luggage.

now faced with extra time at Heathrow and no Pounds to speak of i had to use my credit card. luckily, a while ago i had taken the time to compare credit cards i currently held with others out there and now have one that is accepted worldwide with NO foreign transactions fees. Lola wouldn’t have to go hungry at Heathrow.

i spy wooden shoe key chains & bottle openers. i must be at the Amsterdam airport?!?!

i spy wooden shoe key chains & bottle openers. i must be at the Amsterdam airport?!?!

the remainder of the flights were glitch free. i met a nice man on the flight to Amsterdam, made my final leg to Barcelona and arrived there only 8 hours later than anticipated. during this whole debacle i was coming up with a contingency plan for the bag situation. you see, i made a rookie travel mistake and only had the clothes i was wearing with me…no spare set in case of delayed/lost baggage.

733968_621305507886634_1100751025_n-1

cute dress from El Corte Ingles – disaster averted!

well you can be sure, after 3 different carrier changes and flying through all those massive airports that my bag DID NOT arrive with me. CONTINGENCY PLAN springs into action. i had been madly tweeting with Barcelona friends and was tipped off where to go for one-stop shopping. basically, as soon as i claimed my luggage lost i had approximately 2 hours to shop and get ready before heading out for dinner!! i wasn’t about to miss going out on Saturday in Barcelona at a trendy restaurant and cool late night club. Thankfully El Corte Ingles came to my rescue and i could find a cute dress, top for the next day, a pair of sandals for both days & some new underwear pretty efficiently. AND even with my lack of Spanish and the staff’s lack of English, somehow they were able to tell me to go get a discount card so tourists don’t pay the VAT tax. Gracias!

fun top a la El Corte Ingles - gracias!

fun top a la El Corte Ingles – gracias!

i still need to claim my purchases with the last carrier so i can be reimbursed! UGH – PAPERWORK. the only thing that makes it all less painful is that i used points from my reward credit card to purchase the flight so it’s not like i’m out TONS of money.

PS – i had a super fun Saturday night out in my new outfit in BARCA & my bag did turn up 24 hours later. it apparently had a great night out in the UK!
