#CTC13: Capture the Color with @travelsupermkt

being with LOLA is like being with Skittles

Screen Shot 2013-09-08 at 12.25.52 PM

here we are, a year later and it’s “Capture the Color” time again with Travel Supermarket. i actually enjoy participating in this because it makes me really look through all my travel photos and relive my trips! the idea behind it is you publish a post with pictures that capture these five colors – blue, green, yellow, white, and red – to try and win a boat load of prizes including the grand prize grand – a £3,000 travel fund. now, you know Lola cannot put her entry in without adding a token PINK category!  i was invited to participate by my pal Erin from The World Wanderer and so i hope i do her proud with my CTC photos.

BLUE my favorite kind of blue is the blue of the ocean. this is a photo i have many versions of from over the years. me, coming in for a landing over Miami Beach – LOLA’S favorite quick escape.

GREEN was the color of the day at the Montreal Botanical Garden. isn’t this butterfly just so pretty? there are so many wonderfully pretty things to discover in Montreal.

photo 1-6

YELLOW i love the golden yellow umbrellas these monks are carrying shading them from the Cambodian sun. my entire CTC post could have been full of just Cambodia photos. that county is so colorfully beautiful!

photo 1 copy

WHITE isn’t this such a gorgeous shot of the Swiss Alps? i was soooo very lucky to ski in the winter of 2013 in Verbier, Switzerland where this photo was shot. now i never want to ski anywhere else.

photo 3 copy

RED Paris is such a special city. red wouldn’t be the first color i’d use to describe it but it would certainly be the color i would use to describe the Pigalle neighborhood where you can find the Moulin Rouge.

photo 1 copy 2

PINK and my token pink photo! i just adore this pink sombrero that i was gifted during my trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico from the Bahia Hotel. now i need to return so i can wear it again. ANDALE!

3 Euro Escapes for Less

photo 2-3

LONDON

England’s capital city is notoriously expensive but you can find ways to spend less. For starters, travel in months other than June through August, when it’s most costly to travel there. Taking the train is an affordable option from most EU locations and if you opt to fly, be sure to try each of London’s 3 airports because one may be cheaper than the others. Once in London, money-saving options range from using the Oyster Card or Travel Card for train discounts and the London Pass for savings on attractions & restaurants. You can also find better deals on accommodation if you opt to stay further away from tourist attractions in areas such as Camden & Hammersmith.

eiffel

PARIS

For the lucky inhabitants of the United Kingdom, Paris is one of the more popular destinations. This isn’t just because of the proximity and ease of access from the UK (2 hours by Eurostar train) but also because of the food, wine, culture and architecture. Traveling to Paris in the wintertime is often cheaper as travel companies don’t hike up their prices like during the school holidays. Searching sites like Holiday Discount Centre for deals in Paris is good place to start because, no matter the season – let’s be honest, Paris is always a good idea! Other ways to save while in the City of Light are using the excellent metro system over taxis and planning your museum visits on the first Sunday of the month when they offer free admission.

BUDAPEST

One of my favorite cheap Euro escapes is Budapest. I hope this great city always remains less expensive but, alas, I have a feeling things are going to change. For now, you can get to Budapest rather cheaply within Europe and stay at a nice place for not a lot of money. Obviously, the farther away from the Danube the less expensive. Excellent dining out in Budapest can also be inexpensive. For instance, eating in the Jewish Quarter cost me $12 for a BIG meal and wine – amazing right?! Using Budapest’s mass transit will also save you money and consider getting a Budapest Card to save on public transport and attractions.

I could go on but you get the idea. Traveling to Europe or within it doesn’t have to cost a fortune if you do your homework and time your trip correctly with the shoulder or low seasons. So, go on, get going!

i spy eye candy! – Seattle

da71386627c97f1c906916e5061aa355

This week where in the world is lola? picked the EYE CANDY topic of SEATTLE! I’m SOOOO excited to be featuring the EMERALD CITY as my EYE CANDY because 1) I always wanted to get to Seattle one day AND 2) I’m thrilled that this travel dream is coming true in just over a week. It’s only made THAT MUCH BETTER by the fact that I’ll be seeing great friends!

seattle

I CAN’T WAIT to check out Seattle! It looks so stunning in all its photos. Just look at its modern skyline, the gorgeous bay and Mount Rainier…all in one place!! My trip will be a whirlwind tour but I still plan to get a sense of this charming & cool city by checking out some of its various districts and visiting the famous and unanimously favorite to tourists and locals alike, Pike Place. With Seattle’s history so closely tied to Native American Indians, the logging industry and the gold rush, I feel like I’m heading to the Wild West. Given that it’s one of the fastest growing cities in the USA, I feel there’s a BIG chance I’m going to fall in love with it. I’m certainly ready for whatever adventures are in store for Lola!

Now tell me, what’s EYE CANDY about Seattle to you?

XO – Lola

Four Seasons Toronto – The Brand’s Fabulous Flagship Hotel

Did you know that the FANTABULOUS hotel brand Four Season Hotels and Resorts is headquartered in Toronto, Canada? Yes, this über guest-focused luxury travel brand was born over 50 years ago in Canada! Four Seasons says it’s “redefined luxury for the modern traveler”. I couldn’t agree more. More like spoiled us that we now have similar expectations for other luxury brands. Four Seasons, you raised the bar high and I like it.

It’s true, I’m a BIG fan of the brand and have been so fortunate to travel over the last few years and get to experience many of the Four Seasons properties. I’m frankly in love. It is so amazing, the dedication the staff has to Four Seasons and, more importantly, to you as their guest. So, you can imagine how excited I was to go to Toronto and stay at the flagship property that just opened almost a year ago! The expectations were high and BOY were they met.

FPO_TFY_130

Please allow me to take you on a guided tour of this fantastic property. Starting when you pull up and the sharply dressed Four Seasons Toronto doormen collect you, your belongings, and then open the hotel door, you know you are stepping into something special. 55 floors and 259 rooms of sleek sexiness! Modern design and clean lines make it feel very zen. The professional front desk and friendly concierge that have been expecting you make you feel right at home. Personally, I loved the geometric repetition of the linking squares. Like we are all connected.

FPO_TFY_025

Check out the absolutely lovely bedrooms with city views of the posh Yorkville neighborhood. It’s Four Seasons so you know it has all of the best amenities, like 24 hour service, a spa & salon, an indoor pool – which makes it enjoyable in any season, even a yoga studio! Four Seasons Toronto is located in the heart of Yorkville which means there are swanky shops, chic restaurants & bars and art galleries all around.

FPO_TFY_137

But you needn’t even leave the property to find chic, edgy, cool spots to drink and dine. Here, at Four Seasons Toronto is the fresh, funky and French Cafe Boulud which offers a contemporary twist on French fare. Under the guidance of Michelin-starred great, Daniel Boulud, you can expect it to be nothing short of MAGNIFIQUE!!

dbar

AND, a place where I logged some chill time, dbar! I loved their Neo-Negroni cocktail, because, as you know, I’m a Negroni aficionado. They describe this cocktail as confident, bold, brave & daring. Hmmm…sounds like something else I know. 😉 I was also introduced the Four Seasons super cool cocktail concept the #100MileCocktail while visiting Four Seasons Toronto. This is a locally sourced drink having all ingredients found within 100 miles or less of each Four Seasons property. Toronto’s #100MileCocktail is The Annex and it’s their playful twist on the Negroni. OK, I confess…I liked it too!

the annex

Great design, delicious food and tasty cocktails aside, my favorite thing about Four Seasons Toronto was the warm welcome given by the staff – smiles, notes, personalized amenities and the very important boa-fetching errand. Can you believe they actually went out and secured me feather boas?! Who couldn’t love a property that is THAT interested in making you happy. I also, as always, LOVED the gorgeous floral arrangements all around Four Season Toronto. I have a true appreciation for flowers and especially when they are #lolapink like the ones seen below. STUNNING!

photo 1-6

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts must have immense pride in its flagship hotel. With more than 90 properties around the globe, Four Seasons Toronto has big shoes to fill but I think it wears those shoes like a super model in a pair of luxury designer heels!  The property echos the brand’s “promise of a quality of life”. BRAVO!!

PS – Four Seasons Toronto was awarded the prestigious Five AAA Diamond award. Only .3 percent of the 59,000 AAA approved hotels and restaurants receive this travel authority’s highest rating.

Four Seasons Toronto graciously gave me a media rate during my stay. I was also treated to an unbelievable brunch at Cafe Boulud and this is something NOT TO BE MISSED! It’s true, as admitted above, I love the Four Seasons brand but if I didn’t ‘Lola Approve’ it, I would say otherwise.

8 Supremo Tours in Italy with Walks of Italy

Walk this way. Talk this way. Just give me an Italian kiss!

I was so so fortunate so spend time last November in the beautiful country of Italy. It was my third visit there but I was no less enamored than my very first. Touring cities I had visited previous times, I felt, afforded me the opportunity to be less of a tourist and just enjoy Italy at a pace that they operate anyhow…SLOW! I was also incredibly lucky to partner with the very best tour company I’ve ever encountered – Walks of Italy. Walks of Italy offers small groups (no more than 12 people) everything from guided walks to full-day excursions that are designed to engage and inspire you. As a repeat traveler to Italy, I can assure you, I learned more in my time on my Walks of Italy tours than all other visits combined. Take a look see…

TOSCANA

Tuscan Farmhouse

UNO – My first tour started with a journey to a Tuscan Farmhouse located on the border between Tuscany and Umbria. A 2 hour train ride from Florence, I was going to be spending the day there learning to cook Italian style. SI, you read that correctly, Lola COOK! I wasn’t so sure about the “cooking” part but I’d actually never been to this part of Italy so I was looking forward to the scenery at least. The organic farm is a 40 acre estate with rolling hills, olive groves, vegetable gardens and vineyards. It’s exactly like you picture Tuscany/Umbria to look like. My eyes were completely sated.

photo 3-4

From this 6 hour full Tuscan experience you can expect to tour the estate, learn how olive oil and wine are made and turn their fresh home-grown produce into a meal, all guided by the farmhouse chefs and owners. You might recall, this was my favorite day on my 30 day Eurotour! So, in the end, I enjoyed far more than the scenery. I loved learning how to cook Tuscan Italian food and most of all making new friends!

ROMA

photo 1-4

DUE – My next Walks of Italy experiences were to take place in Rome. So, off I went by train 2 hours in a different direction from the farmhouse to Rome. Once in Rome, I was being treated to a “behind the ropes” tour of the Vatican. VIP…SAY. NO. MORE. I’d been to the Vatican twice before this tour and really felt no need to return, yet again, BUT getting into private rooms and seeing secret treasures without the wait or the crowds made me appreciate the Vatican so much more. As always, I’m surprised I made it out alive. I swear, I think a nun was chasing me out of there 😉

rome food tour

TRE – On Walks of Italy tour number 3 I got to partake in a food tour. I’ve never done a food tour before and I gotta say, “what took me so long?” I mean, how else to better get to the bottom of one’s culture than through its food? This FAB tour kicked off in the famous food market of Rome, Campo dei Fiori. Talk about a visual delight and, of course, a culinary one as well! Expect to have olive oil and vinegar tastings at the market stalls while learning about their aging processes and differences in taste. Go to a famous meat market on the square to try local meats and cheeses. MMMM. Make your own Roman pizza from scratch. SO FUN! And finish off with none other than Italian coffee and gelato. This was tour that was both educational and delicious. It was a full meal and an authentic way to experience Rome just like a local.

ORVIETO

orvieto

QUATTRO – During this Walks of Italy tour, I took a 45 minute train ride out to the countryside to the medieval town of Orvieto. Orvieto is full of history that dates back to its Etruscan origins and is breathtakingly beautiful. While this day trip tour offers insight into the 3,000 year old underground city with its hidden cellars and caverns, my tour also included searching out some of the freshest local foods. I was escorted to a fabulous cheese factory as well as an olive oil factory, where I was able to see how these items are made, processed and prepared for sale PLUS sample them! And I cannot forget to mention the incredible lunch I had at a traditional Umbrian restaurant. I’m not sure I’ve ever had better tasting pasta (and I should’ve prefaced this by stating I ate pasta every day in Italy)!

POMPEII/NAPOLI

pompeii

CINQUE & SEI – My Walks of Italy tours numbers 5 & 6 took me to the ancient city of Pompeii and to the Naples Archeological Museum.  These two tours are quite necessary with one another as you have to see Pompeii to gain an understanding of how life was but visit the Naples Archeological Museum to actually see what was unearthed in more depth. To be sure, Pompeii was fascinating, eery and beautiful, touring the Temple of Apollo, their Roman Forum, a typical house where their outdoor space was in the center of the home and the thermal baths. BUT all the real treasures found in the excavations are housed at the Naples Archeological Museum and, to me, this really drove home how similar we were even 2000 years ago. Found there are intricate mosaic columns, intact rooms from homes, pottery & jewelry and important works of Pompeian art. All retelling the story of this lost city and its inhabitants.

AMALFI/VESUVIO

positano

SETTE & OTTO – Seven found me exploring the Amalfi Coast. Although I’ve been to the gorgeous island of Capri, I desperately wanted to take a drive along that famous coastline. So, I took a Walks of Italy private car tour, because is there really any better way to see the Amalfi Coast?! Even though it was November and most things were closed in the little village towns, it was still pretty and you could just imagine what it’s like in the height of the season. All the towns nestled into the cliffs rolling down to the Mediterranean Sea, it was thrilling to drive the winding roads and walk up and down the small paths in the seaside towns. Stopping for lunch at a spot that had an incredible vista, I felt like I was in a movie.

mount vesuvius

My eighth and final tour with Walks of Italy found me hiking the upper crater of Mt. Vesuvius. I wouldn’t have thought it was all that important to visit Mt. Vesuvius but, after the fact, it was possibly my favorite part of all the tours.  Talk about exhilarating, the VIP access to the crater of Mt. Vesuvius with a volcano expert was quite something. This part of the tour might not be for those with a fear of heights but IT IS for you if you like a bit more action and adventure. I probably loved it because I didn’t know what to expect and OH MY the views of the Bay of Naples from the highest point of the crater are spectacular.

GRAZIE Walks of Italy for treating me to some of the best of Italy I’ve ever experienced. Your guides were passionate, professional and personable and I loved every single thing I was privileged to do with you. My Walks of Italy tours were in the late fall, but I imagine they are outstanding in all seasons. The subject matter is Italy, after all, and the guides are top-notch ECCELLENTE and completely ‘Lola Approved’ lola_blackpink
