This week where in the world is lola? picked the EYE CANDY topic of LA because I’m headed there for the weekend to have a glam tour of the ‘CITY OF ANGELS’. It’ll be fun to do up Los Angeles and the Golden State of California like the stars do!

Screen Shot 2013-10-04 at 9.01.42 AM

Of course I will be staying in swanky style at Sofitel Los Angeles and having drinks and dinner in some of the city’s hot spots. I’m looking forward to getting dolled up for the day by stylists from Fragola and having a fab photo shoot. Discovering more of West Hollywood & Santa Monica will also be a treat BUT the BEST part of all is sharing this weekend with 3 other GLAMOROUS GALS – @JETSETextra, @MrsOAroundWorld and @VanityGirl and this is exactly why it’ll be even more of a delicious EYE CANDY experience!

You can follow our GLAM girlfriend adventures on my InstagramFacebook & Twitter with the hashtag #FourPlayGoLA

NOW all I need to complete my EYE CANDY dreams is a few star sightings! What’s EYE CANDY about Los Angeles to you?

#MTLMoments – My 3 Favorite Drink Experiences in Montreal

MTL

I’ve said it before about the lovely city of Montreal – I feel we are kindred spirits. I was thrilled to return to Montreal this August and get to experience it in summertime. I had so much fun there in the throes of winter but really appreciated all I adored from that visit even more this one. People really get out and enjoy Montreal and I think that’s so cool. From wandering the streets, the foodie treats, dancing the night away at a club or just out for evening cocktails on a terrace about town, Montrealers are mixing it up in their city. I, fortunately, got to do all of the above but for now wanted to focus on 3 of my favorite drink experiences while in Montreal.

Classic Cocktails on the Patio

photo 3-3

Baldwin Barmacie – located in the ultra hip Mile-End area of Montreal, Baldwin Barmacie feels like a retro throwback. I loved the simple decor and the cocktail menu did not disappoint. I decided on one of my usuals, a dirty martini, it was so yummy that i had to order 2! Plus the petit glass it arrived in was tres cute. You can expect a stylish crowd here but not a pretentious one. Ladies, look out for firefighters on duty down the street at the Firefighters Museum. DELICIOUS!

Impromptu Market Picnic with Vin

photo 2-4

Atwater Market – located on the edge of the Old Port neighborhood of Montreal, what a treasure this market is. Quebec products abound here and they pride themselves on delivering local gourmet treats. Fruit and produce can be found as well as butchers and cheese mongers. The flowers aren’t to be missed either. My magic drink moment was found at Première Moisson within the market where they sell delicious pastries and sandwiches. I collected a ham and cheese croissant but not like any I’ve had before as well as a little bottle of vin and a last-minute addition of a chocolate chip and caramel cookie. When I was rung up the woman checking me out said she would have ordered the exact same thing. BINGO!

One of a Kind Glass of Champagne

photo 1-7

La Champagnerie – located in Old Montreal, it totally makes sense to have a bar that specializes in champagne – so romantic! But this isn’t your usual champagne bar. First of all, let me be clear, champagne is FAR from my favorite but this experience and what I had to drink were the top of my drink experiences. SOOOO that’s saying something. The “Sabrage” technique became popular from Napoleonic France times. The sabre was the weapon of choice at that time and with all of Napoleon’s victories, the calvary would open champagne with their sabres. OK so that’s where the tradition started but have you ever been somewhere where they encourage you to do the same? No, I thought not. Pick a delicious bottle of champagne and open it with a blunt knife all on you own! Suddenly it’s the very best tasting champagne on earth. But really…IT WAS.

5 Best Ways to get a Hotel Room Upgrade

As a frequent traveler, I’m sure it’s not hard to believe that I’ve become a ‘hotel junkie’ and know a thing or two about hotels. Believe it, or not, the trick to going from a $150 per night room to a $300 suite in a matter of moments isn’t being famous, having the right connections, or even tricking the concierge into believing it’s your anniversary – sometimes, it’s just a matter of being smart about timing, being honest, and above all, not being a diva! (Yes, I just said that!)

With that in mind, consider trying out these 5 tips the next time you’re headed for a hotel stay and see what happens. With ease and practice, you can easily end up on the VIP list for each and every stay, at each and every hotel! Visit Accor Hotels today to try out some of these tips.

#1 – Purposefully Have Superb Timing

First things first – don’t ever try to get from a low priced room to a high priced room; you’ll have minimal success, at best. It’s always a good idea to meet the hotel half way and make your initial booking for that of a mid-priced room for the hotel. Upgrades are handed over far more easily when they’re not taking as much of a loss, by doing so.

Now, once you have the room booked – wait to check-in until later in the day. The hotel’s clerk has no idea how many cancellations and no-shows there will be earlier in the day and therefore won’t want to risk passing out upgrades until they do. Checking in between 4-6pm, is usually ideal as you don’t want to wait too long and get shuffled into the no-show list yourself.

Keep in mind, however, that if this hotel is at max occupancy – say during a peak travel season – the likelihood of this method working is slim. They simply don’t have any upgrades to hand out.

#2 – Mom Always Said… Be Honest & Mind Your Manners

Every hotel clerk on the planet that has been working the job for even a month has heard the same old white lies again and again and again. The “it’s my honeymoon!” or the “it’s our anniversary” lines are overused and unless you booked way in advance – or are wearing a wedding gown – the hotel clerk is going to smell the lie the second you walk into the lobby.

Believe it, or not, one of the best approaches to obtaining a room upgrade is just to ask for one. Adhere to the first tip on this list, and have great timing, but just ask. Be sweet, be honest, and you might be surprised – insulting the intelligence of the person who has the power, though, is a surefire way to get blacklisted.

Another way, is to make up complaints about your room – don’t do that. On the other hand, if there’s genuinely something wrong with your room, don’t shout and scream – be understanding, be patient, and you will be rewarded.

#3 – Let the Internet Be Your Agent

Not all of us have those real-world connections – like being the General Manager’s accountant – but that doesn’t stop any of us from working the digital connections available to anyone with the internet.

Prior to booking, check out a website called the Kiwi Collection. This is a luxury hotel website that provides loads of free perks and hotel upgrades to their members, especially if you’re with them long enough to achieve VIP status. Once you reach this level, Kiwi agents will actually take on the role of your agent, reach out to the vast array of hotels they have relationships with, and obtain upgrades for you in an instant.

Did I mention this is a completely free service? All they require is your loyalty!

Speaking of loyalty, you can also obtain upgrades just by being a VISA Signature cardholder at over 800 hotel properties sponsored by VISA.

#4 – A Little Loyalty Goes a Long Way

Since we’re already on the subject of loyalty, I’ll go right into how it can help you even more than already mentioned. Hotels want return guests — they want loyalty – they want to know that they’re your favorite hotel. Furthermore, they want to know that you’re recommending them to all of your friends, family, and co-workers.

How can they find out about this? It’s simple – when you refer the hotel, make sure to tell your referral to drop your name at check-in. Believe me, the hotel clerk will make note of it and will thank you with a hotel room upgrade the next time you check-in. Guests don’t just disappear from a hotel’s radar – especially if it’s a nice hotel – they keep a record of everything and everyone; especially their loyal customers.

Keep in mind that this isn’t just a “keep our customers happy and loyal” trick, it’s a “we want to save money on marketing” trick – it costs less to bring back a guest than it does to acquire a new one entirely. That’s business 101.

#5 – If it’s a Real Occasion, Speak up!

As mentioned before, hotel clerks can sniff out a lie really easily. However, if you’re booking with a hotel for a special occasion several weeks out, definitely let them know what the occasion is. If you combine this with tip #1 and check-in later in the day, the hotel will probably try to “wow” their new guests with a surprise upgrade for their special day. They’re in the business of hospitality and they love to extend it.

Furthermore, if you happen to be a loyal return customer – absolutely speak up!! You’ll receive an upgrade, no questions asked!

One Day Stay: Prague, Czech Republic

PRG

Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic and the historical capital of Bohemia. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Prague three times. Once in the winter, once in the fall and my latest visit was in the summer. It is truly gorgeous in all seasons but I think summertime is my favorite even if it was my shortest visit. There is a reason it’s known as ‘The Golden City’ with its gilded roofs and spires but I have never it seen it glisten & shine like it did this summer. It was like the whole city had a golden glow.

photo 1

Prague was founded in the Romanesque period and blossomed in the Gothic & Renaissance eras, playing as the seat to two Holy Roman Emperors. Although this incredible city has a vibrant history it also has a dark side tied to wars and Communism. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Prague has become the 6th most visited European city. I can see why! It is truly stunning and there is no limit to what you can find to do. If culture is your thing, this city hosts museums and musical events galore. If food is your thing, you can find traditional Czech to the latest trends in every other cuisine. Then there’s shopping, nightlife and the great outdoors. Although there is so much of Prague to explore, it’s a great ‘One Day Stay’ destination if you are pairing it with a taste of Europe’s other great Hapsburg capitals – Vienna and Budapest.

DROP YOUR BAG

photo 5-1

I’ve written about the unique and gorgeous Four Season Prague before but I haven’t actually stayed as a lucky guest. So, you can imagine how happy I was to actually rest my head here and in my favorite style room in the Renaissance House! With just over 160 rooms held within 3 different historical structures, Four Seasons Prague kind of felt like returning home. You see, the staff were so gracious during my fall visit that we were all happy to be reunited once again this summer. Of course the hotel was everything I could imagine and more. Sleeping like a princess underneath a crystal chandelier and a soaking tub with jetlag salts waiting for me in the bathroom. Who wouldn’t be happy? Totally LOLA APPROVED! Only steps away from the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square and with views of the Prague Castle across the Vltava River, Four Seasons Prague was perfectly situated for me to get a quick dose of the best Prague has to offer.

DO

photo 2-3

This visit to Prague I took a walking tour to the Hradcany district across the river from Old Town where you can find Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. I wandered up to the city wall and through the less well-known area called the “new world” where many writers and artists have lived over the years. As you move toward the river you will find the neighborhood Mala Strana whose cobblestone streets are so charming. This quiet neighborhood is home to many embassies and is said to be the most exclusive area of Prague. Even just crossing the Charles Bridge was magical in the summertime.

DRINK

photo 3-3

Post walking tour it was time to taste what Prague is so well-known for – BEER! Friends who live there suggested meeting in Letna Park – the biggest park in the center of Prague. You will also find great beer gardens there and a spectacular view of Prague. I loved watching the setting sun over the golden rooftops and people enjoying the summer evening.

DINE

photo 4-1

Back over in Mala Strana or Lesser Town, is where you will find the street named Maltezske namesti and definitely where you should head to dine. Filled with cute cafes and some of Prague’s best restaurants, here you’ll find a variety of places to eat. A few recommended spots are the French brasserie Cafe de Paris, Vino Deja Vu for a glass of local or international wine, and Cafe Lounge for a great cup of coffee.

A big THANK YOU to Four Seasons Prague for hosting my stay and treating me like a longtime friend. I’ve highly recommended Four Seasons Prague repeatedly and so you know I ‘Lola Approve’ it. The views here are mine!

Highlights of Henley-on-Thames and the Royal Regatta

photo 1-3

There are a few things in life that would make this Anglophile’s dreams come true. Things like being in the presence of the Queen. Being named a Dame. Having Centre Court seats at Wimbledon. AND attending the Henley Royal Regatta in style. Thankfully, this regatta season did not pass without my Henley Royal Regatta dream coming true!

1011300_626148910729326_1900361525_n

I can thank my wonderful hosts, Mr. and Mrs. O, for making this possible. Yes, I had to get myself to the UK but, besides that, the rest was sorted out for me. It’s a good thing because while anyone can walk the banks of the Thames, you can only be in certain enclosures (read VIP areas) if you are sponsored by someone. I like to think I’m important but, let’s be honest, I’m not British, therefore I’m not! I’m just a British wanna be. I did do my best to look the part and not embarrass my lovely hosts. You see, there are rules and regulations for the enclosure VIP areas.

photo 2-3

If you are wondering why this is…I think it’s simple tradition. The Henley Royal Regatta was first held in 1839 and I think the dress code reflects those gentler times. Hats, coats, ties & fascinators! For me, it was like dressing up in a costume but so fun nonetheless. Now, I’m sure you are wondering if I was able to make any other English dreams come true. After all, it is called the Henley ROYAL Regatta! The answer is no. No royal sightings for moi even though every reigning Monarch has become its Royal Patron.

photo 3-5

Other traditions that were the order of the Regatta day were Pimms, of course, and afternoon tea. Both of these things are NOT a common practice for me so it was also quite a treat. Here in England at events such as the Henley Royal Regatta, they actually have Pimms on tap! That was truly something for these Yank eyes to behold. I was very impressed to say the least.

photo 5

BUT if you are not able to attend the Henley Royal Regatta, don’t despair. You can get your regatta fix in other wonderful ways. For one, if you visit Henley, you have to make time to tour the River & Rowing Museum to appreciate the town’s long history, pride of rowing and its regatta regalia. The River & Rowing Museum has a great interactive display for anyone of virtually any age to enjoy. I loved seeing the various regatta paraphernalia like oars, trophies, rowing jackets, even a boat from the first Oxford/Cambridge University Boat Race. Oh, and let’s not forget Olympic rowing history as well including a London 2012 Olympic torch!

photo 4-1

Another great way to get in the regatta spirit without attending the regatta is to take a boat ride along the Thames River. There are lots of options available along the riverfront but to do it in real regal style, one should hire the Hobbs of Henley Linssen Yacht! What a stunner of a vessel. If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again – if you are visiting a town on a body of water, you have to get out on it to see things from that perspective. I think it might be my favorite way to discover a place. Being in the lap of luxury aboard the ‘Jacqueline IV’ didn’t hurt the view either! Henley and the River Thames are really such special places not to be missed when you visit the United Kingdom, Royal Regatta or not.

Admission to the River & Rowing Museum is £8.50/Adult, £6.50/Children 4+ or £26 for a Family of 4. Charter rates for Hobbs of Henley’s ‘Jacqueline IV’ Linssen Yacht start at £1500 per week for March/late October and up to £2500 per week for July/August.

I was the lucky guest of Mr. & Mrs. O and their dear friends, Hobbs of Henley and the River & Rowing Museum. It’s safe to say, this outing was right up Lola’s alley (hello, it’s SOOO English) and completely Lola Approved. I hope to make it a tradition of my very own.
