Dream Cruise Destinations

599ac5b858a4d1b03cd0ed6c3a44e9efOne of the best things about taking a cruise is the luxury of waking up in a new destination, with a new place on your doorstep to explore. Cruises are a great way to travel if you’re short on time and want to pack a few destinations into one trip. Alongside visiting some great destinations, you can also enjoy the range of facilities that your cruise is packed with. If you’re traveling with a family, cruise holidays can be a great way to keep the whole family entertained. I’ve been dreaming over a few destinations in Europe I’d love to visit on a cruise and thought I’d share some juicy travel inspiration with you.

GREECE

greece

With the recession in Greece now is a great time to visit because things are cheaper, but also because you can help out boost the Greek economy. You have so many choices in Greece, as there are tons of beautiful islands to visit. You can visit the romantic, beautiful island of Santorini which is world-famous for the white buildings with ocean-blue painted roofs. You could spend a few days exploring Mykonos, with the turquoise water laced with golden sand. Corfu is a beautiful island with striking rock formations and stunning beaches. It would be hard to miss Athens, when visiting Greece, as there is so much historical significance jam packed into this beautiful city.

CROATIA

Croatia is quickly becoming a hot travel destination in Europe and rightly so, it is beautiful. The only problem is, I can see it becoming busier and busier as time goes on. I think now is a great time to visit as it’s on the edge of being completely dominated by tourism, so you can still find areas to enjoy by yourself. I’m hoping to get there this upcoming summer. When sailing in Croatia, it’s common to make your way from Dubrovnik to Split or vice versa. People say Dubrovnik is a must-see stop on any cruise through Croatia, with its charming old streets. Along the way it’s been suggested to stop in Hvar, which is an island that boasts a lot of natural beauty. Mjlet also has lush green national parks, grand lakes and a few beautiful beaches scattered around the island.

ITALY

capri

Ah, Italy. Who can plan a trip to Europe without giving into the temptation that is this beautiful country. Because so much of Italy is next to the coast, you’re almost spoiled for choice in places you can visit in Italy on your cruise. One of my favourite places is Capri, which has great food and beautiful beaches – an irresistible combination. For some striking contrast, spend a few days in Sardinia, where you’ll see impressive coastlines unlike anywhere else.

Have you been to any of these countries? What are your dream cruise destinations?

It’s #Movember – That Means Mustaches & #ManlyMoments

mustache

BIG SURPRISE that Lola can get behind mustaches… you know my love of wearing faux ones around the world. I’ve even got my friends wearing them because being ‘stachey is FUN!! But in all seriousness, November and #Movember are important! It’s a time where people participate in growing mustaches to raise awareness for testicular and prostate cancer. I rejoice because I feel I’m amongst kindred mustache spirits on top of the good deeds it represents.

My adorable friend Raymond from Man on the Lam is doing a HUGE campaign that is quite enviable if you ask me about #Movember. Thanks to Leah Travels for asking me to participate in making my own #ManlyMoments bucket list to support this worthy cause. So here it goes, some will happen and some will never! I’m ok with that – are you?

1) SWIM THE ENGLISH CHANNEL

Back Camera

Lola, once upon a time, did a sprint triathlon and thought to myself, wouldn’t be amazing to be so fit you could swim the English Channel. Let me just say, that 1/2 mile swim was the hardest part of my race. I cannot imagine ever being able to do this feat but am super impressed by all those that make this a goal and set out to achieve it. Very manly indeed.

2) ISLAND HOP SAILING THROUGH THE CARIBBEAN

sail

I wish I could say I can sail. I cannot. I’d like a decent size sailboat along with a handsome crew to do the dirty work for me. I promise to entertain them with my pirate-like antics and rum drinking. I’m buying, so I say let’s taste all the different rums out there in the turquoise Caribbean!

3) COLORADO RIVER RAFTING IN THE GRAND CANYON

Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 2.13.40 PM

This one I actually think will happen. It’s been on my list for a while and based on what I’ve heard and read, you can have quite the adventurous yet glamorous experience in just a few short days. I like a little action packed activity on my vacays so this sounds really perfect for Lola.

4) PARTICIPATE IN THE MONGOL RALLY

1384358_652705611436257_1037198509_n

Happily, I can report this #ManlyMoment will get ticked off Lola’s list this summer. It may seem anti-Lola to want to do the Mongol Rally but I think it sounds like an adventure of a lifetime. Yes, it will be challenging for this poshaholic but I look forward to roughing it. It will make the post-rally rewards that much sweeter. And, that’s the way I roll.

5) DO A CATTLE DRIVE IN WYOMING/MONTANA

TX

So, as you may know, I’m a Texan. And as a Texan, I love the idea of participating in an organized cattle drive tour. I have 3 pairs of cowboy boots and a belt with a ginormous buckle so I’d say I’m pretty much ready to go. Can’t you just see it now?! Pink cowboy hat and boots…me tossing a lasso and capturing a cowboy err I mean roping a cow. Let a girl dream 😉

stache

Now for the serious stuff. The goal is to raise awareness of Movember and men’s health issues. Whether you are a blogger or a reader, you can participate in this great cause.

  • Read along as Raymond attempts to complete his Manly Bucket List at MadeMan.com/Movember
  • Follow along on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtags #Movember and #ManlyMoments
  • Go to Movember.com to find out more about men’s health issues, support a Mo Bro or Mo Sistah, or to register to become one yourself.
  • Check out the schedule for the Made Man Movember Mo’asis Bus Tour and come on by if you are in the neighborhood for free shaves and tons of great activities.
  • Last but not least, DONATE!

OR can make your own #ManlyMoments Bucket List! All you need to do is:

  • Choose five activities you’d like to do and create your own #ManlyMoments Bucket List – they can be something you commit to do during Movember, or simply something you’d like to do before you kick the bucket. (Ladies, this is open to you too!)
  • Nominate five bloggers to create their own #ManlyMoments Bucket List.
  • Include a link to Movember to encourage people to register or donate.
  • Tweet and share your posts with the hashtags #Movember and #ManlyMoments

Also, every time you send a tweet, Vine, Instagram, or post to Facebook with your manly photos, or text using the hashtag #ManlyMoments, the folks at Made Man will donate $1 to the Movember cause.  You’ll also be entered into a draw for a Trip for Two to Las Vegas to experience your very own Mancation, which includes the Top Gun Experience from Sky Combat Ace. Sounds good to moi!

I’m tagging a few of my favorites to play along and I know they will come up with clever posts for their #ManlyMoments!!

Touring and Tasting in Sonoma, CA

I’m excited to share a guest post by one of the most clever and funny people I know. I hope you enjoy Esther’s touring and tasting tips for Sonoma. See if you can figure out what all we have in common and why I adore her so much! I hope she’ll be a regular contributor.

cd67e6aafa73a8dcf9d036da5b9febf9

When Lola asked me to write a guest post detailing my recent trip to Sonoma, CA my first thought was panic. Me? Really? I do not travel like Lola. I do not write like Lola. I do not take fake moustaches with me wherever I go either. What could I possibly bring to Lola’s fabulousness that hasn’t already been said? Well, I’m pretty sure I got it figured out. It’s the “practically virginal traveler, who is so psyched to be away from kids and have a perfectly legitimate excuse to drink all day” market. Perhaps a small niche, but hopefully you’ll get some Friend of Lola Verified tips.

I should probably start off by admitting that my knowledge of wine starts and ends with red/white/rose. Maybe a teeny bit more, but you get the picture. Before we even embarked on this journey I was given a somewhat nose-upturning reaction when I mentioned Sonoma. “Oh. You’re not going to Napa?” “What’s the difference?” I responded. Note: If you are currently thinking “Who the hell doesn’t know the difference between Sonoma and Napa, then I’m pretty sure this tale is not for you.”

So, there are my big disclaimers. I don’t travel much. And I don’t know much about wine except drinking lots and lots of it. Let’s move on.

photo 2-7

By far the smartest decision made on this trip was to hire Jonathan, owner of Healdsburg Tours to be our guide and driver for the day. Jonathan, you had me at Wine-a-Bay-Go! From email exchanges before we left, Jonathan knew that wine knowledge was minimal, but we were a group that wanted to have some serious fun (while we learned a little too.) When I say Wine-a-Bay-Go I am not kidding. He showed up at our rental property with this beautifully well-appointed Mercedes van armed with ideas for how we would spend our day.

He suggested we start “big” and work our way through some of the lesser-known vineyards. “Yep. Sounds good.” Our first stop was Ferrari-Carano.

photo 3-1

This place is heavenly. The grounds. The gardens. The beautiful cellar. The formal tasting rooms. The wow factor was immense. And, while you’ve probably tasted or seen this brand in your favorite restaurants or liquor stores, we opted to try the ones mere mortals rarely taste. Since this was our first stop, we were not familiar the “Join our wine club” mentality. (More on this later.) We bought our bottles and decided to worry about how to get them home later.

(Quick aside…Ferrari-Carano also owns a restaurant in Santa Rosa called John Ash where we enjoyed our first sips upon arrival. Really beautiful property and GREAT happy hour deals on wine and food.)

Here’s the deal about wine clubs. Most of the vineyards are pretty small and do not distribute to the public or even restaurants. The schtick to reel you in is that if you really enjoy the wines you taste, the only way to enjoy them again is to become “members” of the club and receive 1-2 cases of wine a year. “Sign right up” they encourage; and sign up we did.

Our next favorite stop was a veritable smorgasbord of wineries. We decided to do what any lushes would do…divide and conquer and report back on our favorites. Top 3: Trattore, Papapietro Perry and Kokomo — with Kokomo earning top honors because 2 out of 3 couples joined the club — translation, drank the Kool-aid. But yes, we were members. Owners. Family. Proud doesn’t begin to describe it.

And just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, Jonathan suggested one last stop — which of course turned out to be our favorite. (And not because we had been “tasting” for 5 hours.) Two words. Lambert Bridge. (ok three words because I’m going to add Beth in the mix because she was our absolutely outstanding tasting guide.) We three couples left with heads held high that we were part of the Lambert Bridge experience.

photo 4

Although our time with Jonathan was coming to a close, his suggestions for what else we should do were honored and enjoyed for the following 2 days.

The next day, needing just a short break from the tasting menus, we ventured to the coast to a spot in Jenner, CA where the Russian River meets the Pacific. There just happens to be a great little restaurant called River’s End with breathtaking views, mouth-watering food, and oh yes, the best Bloody Mary I’ve ever had. (I said we needed a break from wine tasting, not alcohol altogether.) From the fresh horseradish to the perfect pickled green bean garnish, this drink hit the spot. It’s worth the drive for the view and this drink alone.

photo 1-10

Lest you think the trip was all alcohol fueled, we managed to visit the beautiful Annadel State Park with trails that accommodated all our cardio needs — from quiet walks, to brisk hikes, to 6-10 mile trail runs. Take a break from the vineyards and visit this place!

Our last day, and Jonathan’s suggestions still lingered. We ventured to the oh-so-quaint town of Healdsburg where the girls could shop and the boys could watch a little NFL. With west coast time zone, games start early, and they happily settled in at Bear Republic Brewing Co. while the ladies stumbled upon a great store, Healdsburg Olive Oil Company where we even managed to do a little pre-holiday shopping. And, speaking of stumbling, oh yes, we ended up at another great winery. Even if you don’t need one more taste of fermented grapes ever again, you need to visit Williamson Winery. First of all, the family owners are from Australia and the charming accents alone make this a fun place. They are also really really smart and pair the wines with different cheeses — I’m pretty sure you can join the cheese club too. Accents, great wine, and cheese oh my! Of course we had to join the club!!

And if you think Lola was not with us in spirit, check out these photos. Fabulous cupcakes and an enviable ‘stache. Lola was missed but certainly not forgotten.

                                  photo 2-8   photo 3-3

It was a great long-weekend getaway. And should memories begin to fade, I’ll have about 48 bottles a year to remind me how fun it was!

Esther, affectionately known as Queen, is one of Lola’s most favorite people. She enjoys reading about Lola’s fabulous journeys and joining in on adventures whenever possible—especially Miami!

Explore Barcelona on a Budget

8a6ff62281e721d83c67a1560a007bc3

Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations for short vacations and city breaks in Europe. It’s no wonder really, from beautiful architecture and history to spectacular scenery and beaches, the Catalan capital has it all.

It would be easy to jet off to Barcelona and come back penniless but it’s also possible to explore this Spanish city on a shoestring budget – as long as you know where to look. Before you book, make sure you don’t blow the little cash you have on getting there. You’ll want all the spending money you can get so find budget flights here and keep more cash in your pocket.

Architecture

photo 1-10

Barcelona isn’t known as Gaudi’s city for no reason at all – it’s full of some of his most famous work. If you want to get up close and personal with Sagrada Familia and Casa Batllo, take a walk around the city. If you want to avoid spending on tours, follow the Ruta de Modernsime – marked by red symbols on the ground.

To market, to market

One sure way to blow your budget is to head to the many designer boutiques, but that’s not to say you can’t enjoy a shopping trip. Take advantage of the market stalls lining Las Ramblas and the indoor market, Boqueria Market. You’ll be able to soak up a bit of the atmosphere as you peruse the fresh produce and handmade crafts.

Tapas

photo 2-7

When in Rome (or Spain) it would be rude not to follow the local customs. Fortunately for you, the Spanish make excellent hosts and some bars will even serve up free tapas when you buy a drink. It’s harder to find in the city, but there are a few bars which are still willing. If you can’t find free tapas, it’s still one of the more budget-friendly dining options as you can order a selection to share with friends.

Free entry

If you like a bit of culture, you’ll be pleased to hear that the majority of the museums in Barcelona are free to enter at specific times. The National Museum of Art is free on Saturday afternoons, while the Picasso Museum is free on the first Sunday of the month. Plan your trip around the free admission times and explore the city for nothing.

Beaches

photo 3-3

After you’ve exhausted the city center, it’s time to move to the coast. Barcelona’s beaches are one of its biggest attractions with millions of people visiting every year. Whether you just want to top up your tan, try out a new water sport, or kick back with a cocktail, the beaches are a must-see and will only cost you a little investment in sunscreen!

Four Great Places to Visit in London

There’s so much to see and do in England’s capital city that in can be hard to know where to start. I’m off to Londontown again this week. I’m heading there for a conference but in my spare time, I think I’d like to see a few new things. If you’ve already exhausted some of the most well-known tourist hot spots then, once you’ve booked train tickets to London, why not head to some of the following places to see what they have to offer?

Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 5.14.40 PM

Borough Market

If you’re feeling peckish or just looking for people watching, a trip to Borough Market is well worth taking. It’s open for wholesale trade in the week but if you’d like a look you’ll find Thursday, Friday or Saturday is the time to go. The historic market has traditionally been famous for its fruit and vegetables, but these days you’ll find a wider selection from across the globe. There are plenty of options for grabbing hot food on the go too, so there’s no reason you need to head home with your tummy rumbling.

Trafalgar_Square_and_St.Martin_in_the_Fields_church

St Martin-in-the-Fields Church

While you might be familiar with Trafalgar Square, you may have overlooked St Martin-in-the-Fields Church, which boasts stunning Georgian architecture dating back to 1222 and can be found in its north-east corner. As you’d expect it hosts a number of services, but it also offers live music throughout the week and the chance to grab a bite to eat in the café. MMMM.

Greenwich_Park

Greenwich Park

While it can be an expensive place, the good news for those getting trains to London is the massive selection of things you can enjoy without spending a penny. The city’s green spaces certainly fall in to this category and Greenwich Park, to the south-east, is a favorite for many.  It covers 183 acres and – with it being situated on a hill – offers some fantastic views of St Paul’s Cathedral, the City and the River Thames. It’s also home to deer, a wide range of wildlife, the Royal Observatory and a selection of facilities, including places to grab a drink or a bite to eat.

Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 5.26.19 PM

Dom Severs’ House

If you enjoy the unusual, Dom Severs’ House, which is located on Folgate Street, Spitalfields could be for you. The Grade II listed Georgian terraced property is a historical imagination of what life might have looked like for a fictional family of Huguenot silk weavers in the 18th or 19th century. So, if you’re looking for a trip back in time while in London, give it a look.
