What’s so Luxurious about a Luxury Caribbean Vacation?

 photo 3-2

It’s likely to be a question you have asked, just as you will have questioned whether all-inclusive holidays really provide value for money. What makes a luxury vacation in the Caribbean so special? Would there be a discernible difference between a typical break on your Caribbean island of choice and a vacation that has the “luxury” label attached to it?

photo 4

While there is a plethora of Caribbean boutique hotels that would certainly satiate the need for a ‘luxury’ vacation, it’s essential that you understand what you’re paying for. Naturally, a luxury holiday will come with a pricier tag but when you appreciate what is included, you’ll understand why.

  • There’s often a wide range of sporting facilities available on site at luxury resorts, such as golf, tennis, fitness clubs and watersports opportunities. While you will likely have to pay to add them to a typical vacation, with a luxury vacation, these are often included, making it ideal for those wanting to build or maintain their fitness level while on holiday – or try lots of new activities.
  • Spas will likely be available for a chance to be thoroughly pampered. Let the stresses slip away as you sink into another world at the hands of a top quality masseuse, or take advantage of the various treatments, steam rooms and saunas.
  • The food will be out of this world. Fine dining opportunities will be available at every turn, giving you the chance to sample local specialities and exquisite fare whenever you like.
  • Exclusive beaches that are private to the accommodation give you an added sense of remoteness.
  • Butlers and maids are also part and parcel of the service in some luxury resorts, giving you a taste of the high life and meaning that you don’t have to lift a finger during your stay.

While on luxury Caribbean vacations, you can be sure that you’ll get what you pay for, and that means a higher class of service, facilities and dining options than you would usually expect. All of which will hopefully make your luxury getaway worth every penny!

Love Actually in Budapest – @FSBudapest Gresham Palace

photo 4

Budapest holds a special place in my heart for a few reasons. During my first visit, I got stuck in this fantastic city due to the Icelandic volcano eruption that closed the European airspace for several days. It was one of the best trips of my life. I was excited to visit Budapest but really didn’t expect to love it so much. Why do I love it so? Well, to put it simply, it’s a little rough around the edges. It’s not perfect. It’s not trying to be anything but what it is. Budapest is an old city with many stories and rocky past. You can see signs of this everywhere. In the eclectic mix of architecture. In the monuments. In the graffiti. It’s said that Budapest was a leading cultural capital before World War II, up there with Prague and Vienna. Having visited all three of these European capital cities, I can tell you Budapest is still my favorite. The city is changing, evolving and returning to its glorious past. I just hope it doesn’t polish up too much. I think it’s a diamond just as it is.

Gresham Palace Facede

This return to Budapest was equally wonderful and my love for it remains just as strong. During my last visit I had the pleasure of staying in a hotel that’s a perfect example of what I just described. A stunning building with many stories and rocky past. Although there are no rocky signs now, just the previous glory of this structure, the stories remain. I’m talking about the Gresham Palace that is the Four Seasons Hotel in Budapest. Gresham Palace is acclaimed as one of the finest Art Nouveau buildings in the world and I couldn’t agree more. Not that I’ve seen every Art Nouveau building. It’s just that I wouldn’t necessarily gravitate to this style of architecture until I met this building. For me, there is nothing not to love. In fact, in all its grandeur, are signs of love all around!

photo 3-1

Located on the banks of the Danube on the Pest side, the Gresham Palace is over a century old and a historical landmark. The Hotel opened its doors in 2004 after a $110-million restoration of the property. Given what the structure had gone through, and the painstaking craftsmanship of the original details in mosaics, glass work, ironwork, ceramics, etc. it seems a low price to pay. Originally built as the luxurious foreign head office for the Gresham Life Assurance Company, when the building opened in 1906, it became Budapest’s most prestigious address. The architect, Zsigmond Quittner, was a leading Hungarian architect at the time. Influenced by avant-garde artists in Paris and Vienna, Quittner was given free reign with Gresham Palace. Using vivid colors, themes of nature and the top craftspeople, Quittner created a work of art. The underlying tale is that his design was a tribute to a mystery love in his life. The Art Nouveau building was not only an office but also a residence for British aristocracy, a hot shopping spot with exclusive boutiques, home to a popular coffee house, it even once housed a Cabaret.

photo 1-9

With the siege of Budapest during World War II, Gresham Palace was badly damaged. After the war the building was used for various other purposes but fell into a state of major disrepair. So much so it was almost lost. Thankfully, Hungarians loved this national treasure too and were able to partner with the fabulous Four Seasons to bring it back to its former glory. Of course there is all that one can expect in a Four Seasons property, luxury and modern conveniences, all tied with the elegance this structure holds. To me, it is so much more about the building than anything else. Four Seasons naturally takes pride in the 179 rooms, 17 suites Gresham Palace but so do local Budapest residents. And it is open for all to come in and enjoy. Located at the foot of the Chain Bridge in the heart of the city’s business, art & entertainment district, Gresham Palace is near so many of Budapest’s main sights. Visitors, however, might be inclined to just relax, step back in time and sip on some local Hungarian wine in the lobby lounge and famous peacock walking passage. Voted one of Trip Advisor’s Top 25 Travelers’ Choice Hotels of the World, Four Seasons Gresham Palace’s Gresham Cafe has an internationally recognized restaurant and on the top floor of is the hotel’s luxury spa inspired by Budapest’s ancient bath & spa traditions. All this may make a visit more perfect. For me, nothing is more perfect than the love put into Gresham Palace again and again. I have that same feeling of love for Budapest. It’s a place worth every effort.

A big KöSZ to Four Seasons Gresham Palace Budapest for hosting my stay. I’ve been in love with Budapest since we first met. Staying with you in a palace of love and hearts only makes my love that much deeper. You are perfection and completely ‘Lola Approved’. The views here are mine!

One Day Stay: Los Angeles, California

LAbag

Los Angeles is quite a city. The ‘City of Angels’. The ‘City of the Stars’. I was looking forward to returning to LA and delving deeper into what the second largest city in North America has to offer. I’ve done the Hollywood tour thing before but I hadn’t completely experienced Los Angeles like a star. Let’s just say I wasn’t disappointed with my little luxe visit. Even though there is far more to do in Los Angeles than one day can hold, it’s an easy place to do a little at a time and I enjoy discovering more about LA with every return. Here’s some of what I did during this One Day Stay.

DROP YOUR BAG

photo 1-9

Alright, I will admit it, if you didn’t already know…I’m a sucker for all things French! So, staying at Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills made Lola one happy girl. Not only is this 295 rooms & 28 suites hotel all things luxury, fashionable and French, they had a few other things that made my stay FAB. For one, I LOVE the Hermes products!! Yeah, and the view of the Hollywood Hills was pretty awesome too. Sending up all PINK amenities really won me over. BUT my breakfast in bed with a spicy bloody mary may have pleased me the most. This hotel definitely exudes a see and be seen Hollywood vibe and the location couldn’t be better. Not only did I not wish to leave, I didn’t even want to get out of their ridiculously comfortable bed! TRES ADORE YOU Sofitel.

I have actually been to Los Angeles several times and enjoyed many different parts of the city. Let’s face it, it’s a big sprawling place with so much to see and do. BUT one thing I had NEVER done while visiting LA is go to the beach. It seems insane because when I think of California I immediately think of surf, sand & suntans. SO, I thought it was high time to visit the LA beaches. Fortunately, there’s a way to do this in style and it’s especially convenient for travelers. May I introduce you to the Beach Butler by Perry’s Cafe. Offered at 3 different Santa Monica locations, Beach Butler has two levels of service: standard and custom. Both come complete with a chair, umbrella, towel & table but the custom also offers the service of lunch and drinks. Standard service starts at $50 and custom at $100. It was perfect to drop in, relax in the Cali sunshine, have a bite and then leave without any of the fuss. Why oh why can’t every beach have this?!

Santa Monica is a neighborhood I’ve been to before but I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of what all you can do there. This visit to Los Angeles I had a few cocktail pit stops but by far my favorite was The Craftsman Bar and Kitchen. As they say themselves, it’s like drinking and dining in a beach style living room. Completely shabby chic, cozy & casual, naturally I enjoyed a hand crafted cocktail. It was delicious and I was delighted to have discovered this special spot in Santa Monica.

Nic’s Beverly Hills was the perfect place for a great bite and a glass of wine while in LA. I particularly enjoyed the watermelon and goat cheese salad. Not only was it refreshing and delicious, it was also so creatively presented. BUT I have to tell the truth. The piece de resistance wasn’t the food for Lola. You see, Nic’s also offers this amazing experience, the VODBOX, which is right up my alley. You may be thinking “what the heck is a VODBOX?” It’s only the coolest walk-in freezer (no pun intended) for vodka tasting. The room is lined with literally hundreds of bottles of vodka. OH YEAH! Even better, you’re provided with faux fur coats & hats so you can stay warm inside the 28°F freezer. I loved the dressing up, of course, and the flight of vodka as well. Someone *should* remind me, though, tasting doesn’t mean you have to drink it all LOLA! Flights begin at $21 per person, bottle service begins at $250.

A huge Hollywood round of applause and thank you for a wonderful time in Los Angeles. My Beach Butler service in Santa Monica, cocktail at The Craftsman and dinner & drinks at Nic’s Beverly Hills were complimentary. Sofitel Los Angeles graciously gave me a press rate! All these experiences were very ‘Lola Approved’ and I express my own opinions.

3 Ways to Get a Taste of Seattle in 24 Hours

31d225f3df2b4bbe02b5d7d9fe68b8d4

Sometimes people think I’m a bit nutty cramming a trip into a weekend like my recent visit to Seattle, Washington. Yeah, I’d never been but I figured a little was better than not at all and that really is my motto for travel in general. I’m not a nomad. I have a home base. Sometimes I’m gone a day or two, sometimes 2 weeks plus but, even with the longer trips, I’m never in one place long. I wish I felt I had more time to really live in the places I visit but I just don’t. So…a little is better than nothing. I get a taste for the place and from that, I can decide if I’d like to return. Where Seattle is concerned the verdict is YES, I’d like to go visit for longer.

I did several things while in Washington, all fun, but these are the 3 things that made me leave Seattle wanting more.

Touring Pike Place

photo 2-3

When I asked the question on Facebook where should I spend time in Seattle if I had one day…universally the most popular answer was Pike Place. Now, I’m into markets and love to try the food and snap photos of the flowers, etc. but what made Pike Place extra special for me was that it’s located near the water, so it had spectacular views of Puget Sound. I’m such a water person and found that even on a gray day the Sound was so calming and romantic. No, I didn’t spend all my time staring at the water. I did enjoy watching the famous fishmongers at Pike Place Fish Market toss the fish orders to customers – a definite must see. Another must is stopping by Truffle Cafe and sampling their various delicious foodie products and local Washington wines. Yes, I brought a bottle home. No, I don’t have it any more. BUT, I think my favorite find of Pike Place was Rachel’s Ginger Beer. Their flagship store and bar sells their handcrafted ginger beer products and serves YUMMY drinks. One of my all time favorite drinks is Dark & Stormy and they had their own version of this – not with Goslings Rum – so I was skeptical. It very well may have been the best Dark & Stormy I’ve ever had! Soooo their ginger beer is THAT GOOD.

Experiencing the Nightlife

canon

Leaving the East Coast in the early evening, I arrived in Seattle around 10pm. Since I was there for such a short time, I wanted to make the most of it and insisted on going out that evening. Seattle truly seems to have a HUGE food & drink scene and I wanted to get a small dose of it. The challenge was A) finding a place that served food late into the evening B) it had to be a cool hot spot. A local foodie expert pointed me in the direction of Canon and all my problems were solved. Offering a small but delish menu, I went with the prosciutto, chèvre, arugula & roasted grape flatbread. MMMM. Better still, Canon has the largest collection of spirits in the western hemisphere with over 2600 labels. There was no way Lola was going to be disappointed with her cocktail. Canon has a fun cocktail menu with drinks named ‘Shrouded Roulette’, ‘Campfire in Georgia’, ‘The Hooker’. I went for ‘Swagger’ – a gin based drink with bitter rhubarb, grapefruit & lime. LOVED it! Located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, there was quite a hipster scene, the entire street was buzzing. I loved that Canon was fun, funky and small. It felt like a secret hot spot.

Leaving the City Limits

sixt

The other thing many people suggested while visiting Seattle was actually taking a drive outside the city to get a sense of the gorgeous scenery. I was able to do just this, taking a road trip east to Leavenworth, Washington. Not too far outside the city limits, the gray skies turned blue and the sunshine came out. The rivers and mountains were stunning, just like I imagined from the movies. What made the drive even better was the sweet ride I got with Sixt. Newish to the US rental car market, Sixt has been worldwide for over 100 years. Not only did I love the amazing & luxurious BMW to get me around but better yet was the service I received from the Sixt staff upon check-in and return. I have never had a better car rental experience in my life. SERIOUS! Seattle and Washington State are truly very special.

Big thanks to Sixt for working with me to experience your superior customer service. Completely ‘Lola Approved’ I look forward to driving another one of your awesome cars soon.

One Day Stay: Toronto, Ontario

TOR

Toronto is now known as North America’s 4th largest city. Flying into Toronto, I would have thought it was the largest. The skyline of buildings seems to go on FOREVER. Once really in downtown Toronto there are enclaves of different neighborhoods with different personalities, which are fun to discover. One of my favorite things about Toronto is that it is a water city, located on the Great Lake – Lake Ontario. It almost seems like the city is on the ocean! Toronto has so much to offer it might not be fair to only give it a One Day Stay but I can say you won’t be lost for options in all varieties of dining, drinking and doing even if just for one day.

DROP YOUR BAG

photo 2-3

Part of the Skyline Hotels & Resorts group, Cosmopolitan Hotel Toronto is a perfect place to drop your bag! Located in the heart of Toronto, you can easily get to anything in the city while enjoying the comfort of one of their 65 luxury studio apartment style rooms complete with a kitchen. It’s like a home away from your home. The staff is also extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t miss out on the spa or the wine bar!

DO

One of the best times I’ve EVER had was going to a drag queen show at Woody’s in “The Village” – a super friendly gay neighborhood in Toronto. Located on Church Street, I was game to try something new. I had no idea I’d be dancing to fun tunes and complimented so many times in one evening. Who doesn’t like being told repeatedly that they are gorgeous?! Just sayin’! With DJ’s nightly, Woody’s offers other kinds of entertainment but the drag queen show, for me, was just perfect.

DRINK

photo 1-9

Let’s just say I had an overly ambitious cocktail crawl outlined for my time in Toronto. Although I did have a drink at Four Seasons and Shangri-la, my favorite place was The Hazelton ONE Bar and Patio. The place was a bit more cozy than the other two and the crowd was fun. Located on Yorkville, ONE Bar is known for hand-crafted cocktails made with infused vodkas & fresh local produce. MMMM!

Luma, one of Oliver & Bonacini’s many famed restos in Toronto, is located inside the TIFF Bell Lightbox – which is home to the Toronto International Film Festival, and is one cool restaurant and space.  Luma’s menu features Canadian artisanal cuisine using the finest local and regional ingredients. I went with the Niagara Gold Beef Burger and it was absolutely delish. I’m a big burger fan so I’m not always that easy to please. Let’s just say it had the perfect combination of extras in bacon jam, thyme and garlic aioli, niagara gold cheese and chili pepper fries. TO. DIE. FOR. Also, I really loved Luma’s decor – so bright, airy and cheerful.
