stepping out of my comfort zone…in Miami

yes, in my favorite Miami – i faced a comfort zone challenge

photo 3-14

you hear all the time about travelers pushing themselves outside their “comfort zones”. i think Lola often comes across as fearless & confident (which is mostly true) but i do know something about comfort zones. for example, last year when i went to Cambodia. it was the first time i’d been to Asia. the first time i went to a third world country. the first time i did a Habitat for Humanity house build. the first time i took flight longer than 10 hours. all these were certainly comfort zone challenges for me. ones that i’m glad i faced because the result was so rewarding. the story i want to share isn’t quite like that but it was a comfort zone challenge nonetheless and one i think a lot of women face.

on my last trip to Miami, i was running a super fun swimwear contest on my website with the amazing luxe swimwear store Orchid Boutique. their flagship store is located in South Beach and since i was going to be in Miami anyway, i thought it would be great to check it out and show off some of their styles to help promote the contest. sounds reasonable, right?! except that meant i had to try on the swimsuits and not in the privacy of my own dressing room. i agreed to ‘model’ them and be photographed…something i’m not exactly comfortable with. after all, i’m no Sport Illustrated swimsuit model and i bet even those women struggle with being on display for photos.

BUT i will say it wasn’t as bad as i thought it was going to be. NO i didn’t go on a crash diet or start exercising every day the month prior to my Miami trip. those things are just too difficult for me these days with the traveling lifestyle i have. AND my travel lifestyle makes me far more happy than when i ate carefully and exercised all the time. i’m not poo pooing being healthy. i do enjoy exercise & being in good shape but i think there is a balance. i was always critical of myself and would have been terribly uncomfortable having my photo taken in a swimsuit even in my top fitness form. SUCH A SHAME.

so why was it not so bad? well, for one, the gals working at Orchid Boutique are there to build you up and help you find a swimsuit that looks great on you. it was like shopping with your best friends. i really appreciated their support and input. in fact, i even tried on and bought one swimsuit i thought i’d NEVER look good in all thanks to their knowledge base of the different lines & my body type. i couldn’t have had a better bikini shopping experience, and ladies, i know you know that is REAAAAALLY saying something. we all pretty much hate swimsuit shopping and are so cruel to ourselves during the process. i left Orchid Boutique 4 bikinis richer and smiling from ear to ear.

other reasons this experience was less painful…my friends supported me during the process of publicly posting these photos for the contest. i appreciate them too for that. BUT the biggest reason it was OK is i decided i had to be OK with it. i committed to modeling the swimwear so i might as well smile, own it, and have fun. and that is what i did. despite being a good 10 pounds heavier than i’d like to be, i just decided to be kind to myself and not worry any more. i gotta say it was very liberating and i hope to adopt this attitude about other things in my life. i don’t know if this comfort zone challenge story is any help to any of you out there but i hope it is. we are all our own worst critics. it would be great if we could all be less hard on ourselves. maybe we’d all smile more and have more fun more often.

lola’s 5 airport essentials

a few of my travel musts

ready for take off

if you are a frequent traveler like me, you probably have spent more than your fair share of time trekking through airports. barring the few times you may have seen me running through the airport like a crazed maniac to catch my flight, (I’M LOOKING AT YOU, ZURICH) these experiences don’t tend to be too bad. this is usually because a number of things go right AND many of them are because of my planning. in light of this, i decided to put together a check-list of airport essentials, that you might wish to put into your repertoire, whether it’s before leaving home or while you’re at the airport.

i always bring things to veg out with like books & magazines

number one: bring something to do while you are waiting at the airport and sitting for hours on the plane. for some, this may be just using your smart phone to play one of your many games like words with friends, solitaire or angry birds. BUT keep in mind, if the airplane doesn’t have WiFi, you’ll need other things to distract you. i bring music, magazines & a book to keep the boredom at bay. AND being a writer, i always have a notepad handy just in case i have a funny travel moment to document or find my creativity thousands of feet up in the air. actually, i usually do a lot of writing during my travels!

no matter where you are – grab some H2O

number two: buy a bottle of water once you’re through security. it’s extremely frustrating if you bring a big bottle of water to the airport with you, thinking you’re really sensible and prepared, only to have it confiscated the minute you go to security. i typically have this issue in between connecting flights. makes me SO crazy to pay for drinks only to have them taken!!! so to save any embarrassment, buy your water once you have gone through this ordeal and are on your way to the gate AND be sure to drink it before boarding your next flight or you’ll get it taken like i have a hundred times.

things lola always travels with – baubles, iPhone, flip flops, pashmina & moolah

number three: after all the long haul traveling i’ve recently done, i’m thinking compression socks are a REALLY good idea. i’ve never seen my feet & ankles so swollen than after my flight home from Asia and then to Spain. i also think that bringing a scarf, pashmina or blanket of your own is a MUST. you never know when an airplane is going to be frigid or that your fellow passenger will have a nasty cold that you’d like to cover your face from!

lola’s favorite jet lag remedy

number four: depending on where you are going, it’s always a good idea to bring on board any medications you’ll be needing while traveling and away. if i’m doing a timezone change of 3 zones or more, i always take No Jet Lag. BIG FAN of this jet lag remedy although there was NO HELPING me for my recent visit to Spain. jet lag definitely won the battle on that trip! some people need eye drops because the air on the flight is so dry. whatever your case may be definitely don’t take the chance of checking important prescription medications!!

carrying on the essentials for the ‘just in case’ clause

number five: lately, i’ve been taking some clothes in a carry on for a day or two of survival – just in case my bag didn’t make one of its connections. luckily, it has always arrived BUT this mode of operation gives me peace of mind. i also think any precious valuables should travel with you onboard. if it’s possible that your checked baggage is going to get ransacked by some kind of mystery security – i for one don’t want to trust that they won’t take my precious trinkets. FINALLY, probably the most important thing to remember to bring with you (BESIDES YOUR PLANE TICKET & PASSPORT – duh) is a sense of humor. air travel is full of obstacles that could make you MAD. better to laugh it off than to burst a blood vessel or worse, when dealing with all the unknown frustrations that air travel gives us all!

what helps you get by during your travels & is on your airport essentials list?

i spy eye candy! – Amalfi Coast

This week where in the world is lola? picked the EYE CANDY topic of the AMALFI COAST! i have had the pleasure of visiting Capri, Italy and looking back onto the gorgeous Amalfi Coast. let me just say, as much as i loved Capri, i longed to wrap that coastline during an afternoon road trip.

the BEST news is, I WILL be doing just that come November with Leah during our month-long Euro Tour. i look forward to my return to Italy and especially discovering this beautiful place where the land meets the sea. there has to be a good reason that it is the backdrop of so many plot lines in books and films. i can only imagine of the story lines i will have to share from my journey there.

where are you longing to go? what eye candy destination do you dream about? let me know!

ciao bella – lola

travel crimes ala lola & leah

partners in travel crimes

some of you may be aware that Leah & i refer to ourselves as “travel partners in crime”. funny thing is we really aren’t breaking any travel rules or laws – at least i think 😉

our travel crimes look more like this

  • packing way more than we’ll ever wear be that clothes, jewelry, shoes, even pajamas.
  • forgetting important items like my favorite eyeshadow & lip gloss.

crisis averted – leah had spare lip gloss!

  • being over-served with alcohol and being hung over a good part of the next day.
  • not eating enough during the day therefore contributing to our hangover status.

photo evidence of damage from one night

  • not having enough time to layout by the pool and wash my hair before going to dinner so pool water will have to do.
  • shooting goofy stunt videos and running out of memory therefore not really having footage.

lola fell on her ass just before this picture! no wearing wedges standing on stadium seats!!

  • trying to do funny poses for pictures and instead falling down & injuring ourselves.
  • having an uncanny knack for losing our iPhones (me more than Leah).

things we do on purpose and well: book plane tickets & make the flights! book places to stay that aren’t too shabby. find the best places to eat & what to drink (duh)! find fun things to do despite our shenanigans.

i meet up next with my partner in travel crimes in Spain. god help us that we don’t get over-served, fall down or lose our precious iPhones. one can only hope…one can only hope.

travel: reflections and a note of gratitude

FRIENDSHIP – one of the many reasons travel is so precious to me!

i have a lot of reasons for loving to travel but i think my #1 would be making new friends. i recognize i’m fortunate to have done my fair share travel lately – especially when i reflect on my friendships. AND this summer has been a different kind of travel experience that i feel equally thankful for – having my love of travel come to my own part of the world.

when i “helped” Alex of Crazy Sexy Fun Traveler – i knew it was the right thing to do. what i didn’t consider is how much it would mean to me. by having her visit, it was like i traveled without leaving home. she told me about her travels and home country of Slovakia and it was as if my world had widened yet again. it was bittersweet when she left to go back to Europe. i was saying goodbye to a new friend – like i would to one i met while on the road.

lola & crazy sexy fun traveler

soon after Alex departed, i had an invitation to pop down to Newport, Rhode Island, to meet up with another travel blogger, Priscilla of Weekend In Paris. i was really busy catching up that week and could have easily convinced myself not to go but BOY was it ever what the doctor ordered! i’m so glad i went. not only did i have a lovely time and was treated like royalty by Priscilla but, also once again, i made some new friends that i really respect & enjoyed their company tremendously. i know we will connect over and over again. as i left the Newport city limits i wasn’t as sad as usual because Newport isn’t too far for me to return for an afternoon and catch up more with Priscilla and Co.

Newport Tweetup – Priscilla of Weekend in Paris is the beautiful brunette next to lola

plus, i was returning home to prepare for a visit i’d been looking forward to all summer long. Leah of Leah Travels was coming to visit me! we had some fun Boston plans cooked up, of course, but we also needed to plot our BIG upcoming trip of a lifetime. our one month-long tour of Europe from November to December. Leah and i had loads of fun on Friday checking out a few of the famous Boston sites and then heading to the Red Sox game. even though the Sox lost, there’s nothing quite like a game at Fenway Park. the rest of our time together was really devoted to getting “work” done. thank goodness we enjoy what we do and making our plans – really our “work” was all FUN. any time spent with Leah is always a pleasure for me. it’s like having a taste of Texas & being with an old soul of a friend. now it’s Monday and Leah has gone back to Texas and i now find myself sad again. my summer visits are over for now.

lola & leah – travelin’ BFFs

maybe i will see Priscilla again before the summer ends and i know i will be seeing Leah & Alex at TBEX in Spain in September. BUT that seems so far away. i’m glad i have my biggest adventure yet to distract me – my late August trip where i will meet a team of Australians in Cambodia for our Habitat for Humanity build. can you imagine how sad i will be when i have to say goodbye to them?

meeting new people is a very important part of my life and i’m always grateful for the new friendships. you learn so much by making new friends and inviting them into your life. while i love to learn about new places and see new things with my own eyes, it is TRULY the people from all over that i bond with and what makes it the hardest to say goodbye.

thank you for all the visits – you are some incredible ladies & you made my summer!

happy travels to you all! XO – lola

PS – if  you are heading to or near Boston – let me know fellow travelers. i’d love to meet you too!
