my controversial musings for 2012

things i wonder?! what is controversial? what is weird? what is normal??

what is normal?

when facing a new year, you start to reflect on the one ending. my last year -2012- was amazing but not without controversy.

i’ll start with this: i live in a candy colored perfect world almost all the time.

YES, i’m lola & my favorite color is pink!

lola

BUT seriously, i live in a bubble & i ABSOLUTELY LOVE to get out of it and find the nitty gritty real world.

WHY? because it’s where most people live.

i know i’m lucky. i’m happy to return to the bubble BUT only temporarily. it’s not reality. it’s not where life is really happening. sorry friends if i offend.

habitat cambodia

this year has been one of my very best because i pushed my limits and you know what, i pushed yours too. who sets the rules? why are they set? who cares why? isn’t it better to learn from the challenges? isn’t better to know what else is out there and why we’re lucky? or how we are short-falling ourselves???

how can you judge me for wanting to know? how can you judge me for sharing with you what else is out there? i often wonder…don’t you want to know? aren’t you curious how the world gets on in other places?

lola-antoinette

is this too deep for you because it’s me, lola, saying it? or are you actually reading it??

i want you to know something. when people ask me what i do when i’m away traveling, no one says “oh well, how do you do that?!” OR “you have a tolerant family” they don’t think to themselves or whisper to others that something *MUST* be wrong to wish to travel so much.

real friends

NO, they actually treat what i do as a real profession and me as a person who should be able to go out into the world and do what it is i love. they don’t impress upon me rules. maybe it’s because they’re strangers. even still, i appreciate the response. the lack of judgement.

i’m especially embarrassed to say that the biggest judgers are women. and not ignorant women BUT women who should know better. these women treat me as if i should be living the life of a “traditional” woman. whatever that is. SHAME. ON. YOU. no wonder we haven’t advanced that much. we are our own worst enemies. almost NO men have said something indicating i’m making bad life choices. almost 100% of the negative feedback is from women. why?! because men know that the world is an oyster and it’s for the taking.

my life

what am i trying to say here? many things. ladies, stop being so mean to your own kind. just because someone is doing something different doesn’t mean it’s wrong. AND!!! is it your business anyway? i wonder?? i’m guessing NO NO NO!

it's your story

what else am i saying? GO. FOR. IT. don’t stop dreaming! despite my hurt feelings at people’s judgements this past year, my pushing myself has brought ME much happiness. I HAVE created something viable of my very own & i LOVE what i do!

so nanny nanny boo boo!

AND don’t expect 2013 to look ANY different. BIGGER BOLDER BETTER!

lola’s making her dreams come true

i wanted to touch back to a recent post of mine “i have a dream!” i outlined what my goals are to move MY DREAM forward and thought you might like to know what exactly i’m doing to meet these goals.

  • i will get published once a month somewhere else besides my own blog.

starting in january – i have been published at least once a month. check out my stories on my PRESS page.

  • i will diversify where i write so i show that i can adapt to different styles.

writing for different sites such as Huffington Post Travel (more traditional press), The Daily Meal (all things food & drink) & Travel Sex Life (niche travel) have been a great start.

  • i will build a real website to be more professional.

well, you’re looking at it! hopefully you find it a little new & improved!!!

  • i will call myself a travel writer because if i can’t who can?

i now proudly carry around my business cards and tell others that i’m a travel writer. so far, everyone takes me seriously including myself!

  • i will go to conferences to learn more about the trade.

i’ve already attended a marketing conference about how to influence & engage clients/customers, which in my case, is my readership & potential brands i may soon work with.

i will also be attending TBEX in mid-june, which is the world’s largest travel blogging conference.

  • i will network with people that are influencers in the space.

TBEX is an awesome opportunity to meet other travel bloggers, social media influencers and PR & travel brand professionals.

in addition, i have traveled to two tweet-ups to meet other travel writers and attended two networking events in NYC for the travel space. i’d say nothing beats meeting up face-to-face and having some good old-fashioned networking time.

  • i will take on challenges that will put me outside my comfort zone.

i think it’s fair to say going to these conferences, networking events & meetings has put me a little out of my comfort zone. it’s not easy when you are new in a career & meeting people for the first time.

other challenges i’m taking on: mentioned in my previous post – doing a Habitat for Humanity build for the first time in a country (& continent) i’ve never been is definitely a comfort-zone challenge!

going to Europe for a month with my travel partner in crime Leah, of Leah’s Travels, will also be a great challenge. while i’m ridiculously excited about this amazing opportunity, it will take a lot of coordination to be gone for a month on both ends. Leah & i have tons of planning to do in the next many months. we want to make the most of our month in Europe, again networking with brands & seeking out opportunities for ourselves as well as representing Go with Oh & the other brands we work with in the best way possible.

the REWARD?! i can see my dream being realized.

  • i HAVE been published once a month in diversified areas.
  • i DID launch a new website.
  • i DO call myself a travel writer and do others consider me just that.
  • i HAVE & WILL continue to go to conferences & networking opportunities so that i meet people, learn & grow my brand.
  • i AM & WILL take on challenges that put me outside my comfort zone.

almost six months into 2012 and i have some amazing successes and huge things to look forward to that i never even imagined happening in this year. all i can say is WOW  my goals were worth setting and pursuing! i can’t believe i’m this far down the path to reaching  MY DREAM! i hope you stay tuned to see what happens next…i know i can’t wait.

thanks to all for your continued support – it means more than you know!!

keep dreaming & keep traveling! XO – lola

i have a dream!

did you know, i have a dream?

some of you do…some of you don’t. my dream is to travel and write fun & funny stories about the experiences i have through the eyes of a woman named LOLA. LOLA is a personality, a brand if you will, that people seem to be drawn to because who doesn’t want to have fun? who doesn’t want to have a laugh? life is FAR TOO SERIOUS sometimes and it’s nice to just be light and airy – NO?! in my dream, people enjoy LOLA and her writing so much that she is able to make a career out of her writing and brand. wouldn’t that be nice to have a BIG DREAM come true?

in order to continue to move MY DREAM forward, i set some goals for myself at the beginning of 2012:

  1. i will get published once a month somewhere else besides my own blog.
  2. i will diversify where i write so i show that i can adapt to different styles.
  3. i will build a real website to be more professional.
  4. i will call myself a travel writer because if i can’t who can?
  5. i will go to conferences to learn more about the trade.
  6. i will network with people that are influencers in the space.
  7. i will take on challenges that will put me outside my comfort zone.

it’s mid-april and so far so good, LOLA. i so appreciate the support of those who encourage me and are proud of what i’m doing. it is HARD to start something new and attempt to be good at it. i truly love traveling – the world is a wonderful, wonderful place with so many interesting people in it. i am so happy to have the opportunity to cross paths with new people and see new places and then return home to write about the things that i’ve experienced and learned. THANK YOU!

i hope i never stop traveling. i hope i never stop learning. i hope i never stop making new friends. i hope i never stop writing. i hope i never stop dreaming!

happy DREAMS & TRAVELS to you! XO – lola
