5 Caribbean Islands Worth the Visit

Sometimes the lesser known Caribbean Islands are the real hidden jewels

“Aruba, Jamaica, ooo I wanna take ya, Bermuda, Bahama…” We all know the lyrics to the classic Beach Boys tune, “Kokomo,” — and the islands that they are singing about. When you think of the Caribbean, certain destinations are bound to come to mind, but there are many more islands in the sea than those we typically think about.

In fact, there are some who claim that if you want to see the “real” Caribbean, you’re better off to skip the more popular islands and plan a visit to one of the lesser known, but still gorgeous and hospitable, smaller islands. While you might have to take an extra flight or two to get there, and you won’t find sprawling all-inclusive resorts on these islands, you can still stay in a luxury hotel and enjoy unspoiled natural beauty, uncrowded (or even deserted) beaches, warm tropical breezes and spectacular sunsets. When you’re searching for Caribbean vacations online, don’t just limit yourself to the well-known, popular islands.

Trinidad and Tobago

Located in the extreme southern Caribbean off the coast of South America, Trinidad and Tobago is two islands but one country. The wealthiest country in the Caribbean — and one of the richest in the world, thanks to the petroleum industry — Trinidad and Tobago also has some of the richest biodiversity in the Caribbean. Expect to find mountains and plains inland with clear water and coral reefs just off the coast. But the real draw to these islands for many visitors is the annual Carnival, a pre-Lenten celebration of music, dancing, costumes and pageantry. You won’t find many large resorts here, but there are plenty of hotels, inns and guesthouses to choose from, as well as direct flights from several major airports. LOLA LOVES A PARTY!

Dominica

photo 2-2

First things first: if you want to spend your days on a white sandy beach, this is not the island for you. Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) has very few sandy beaches, and instead has a very rocky coast. That said, it’s considered by many to be among the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, with a lush tropical rainforest and mountains serving as the major attraction. Fans of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films might recognize some of the landscape of the island, as much of the second and third films of the popular series were made in the jungles here. The airport here is too small to accommodate large planes, but you can take a short flight on a small plane from Puerto Rico, Antigua or Barbados to explore the many rivers, waterfalls and rainforest areas on this island. PIRATES ARE ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA!

Barbuda

backwash_l

A not as well known, less-populated twin to the island of Antigua, Barbuda offers similar pristine beaches and stunning scenery, but without the crowds. Take a catamaran from St. John, Antigua, to Barbuda (a three-hour trip) and book a room in one of the few inns on the island. In fact, the island is so underdeveloped that you might think that you’re the only person there, making this the perfect destination for a relaxing getaway or honeymoon. Activities are limited mostly to lying on the pink and white sand beaches, beach combing or snorkeling among the many reefs and shipwrecks off the coast, but if you want laid-back and secluded, this is the island for you. YOU HAD ME AT PINK BEACH!

Grenada

Known as the “Spice Island,” thanks to the abundance of spices, including cinnamon, nutmeg and clove grown there, Grenada is currently very popular among European travelers and is starting to gain notice among travelers from other parts of the world. Located in the southern Caribbean, the nation of Grenada includes the large island as well as several smaller islands, many of which are uninhabited. The vast majority of the tourism industry in this friendly nation is located on the southern coast of the main island, where you’ll find Grand Anse, widely considered one of the best beaches in the world. Further inland, you’ll find lush, jungle-covered mountains, full of colorful plant and animal life. IF IT’S POPULAR WITH EUROPEANS THEN SIGN. ME. UP.

Nevis

photo

Nevis, about 200 miles south of Puerto Rico, is one of the most unspoiled islands in the Caribbean, and really, on Earth. At the center of the island, the 3,200-foot Nevis peak begs to be explored — if you can pull yourself away from the pristine white sand beaches and the charming, historic town center. Accommodations range from mountainside bungalows to five-star seaside resorts, allowing you to kick back, relax and enjoy the natural beauty and laid-back feel of the island. 5 STAR, PRISTINE, CHARMING…I’M THERE!

The next time you think “Caribbean,” expand your horizons and consider visiting one of these or the dozens of other small islands. You’ll have a more intimate, relaxing and authentic Caribbean experience.

How to have an Endless Summer…head to the Caribbean!

Lola wants to chase the sunshine!

photo 1-17

Not sure if you’ve noticed but I’ve been a bit obsessed with beaches lately. Let’s see, I wrote about Portugal’s Top 5 beaches and Florida’s Top 6 last week for starters. Even though there is still a month left of summer, I feel like the season is getting away from me. I truly think I’m the least tan I’ve ever been and the dread of the LOOOONG winter in Massachusetts is already creeping into my mind. UGH. So what is a beach girl to do? Think of ALL the ways she can have an Endless Summer is what!

98365fd38c4f6ef6fa03ecc7d5ec0334

I imagine you are thinking, how is that possible?! To extend the summer season a bit longer, I think the best bet would be to look for great travel deals in warm beachy destinations in the off-season. So, after a bit of digging and referencing Travelbag’s Caribbean holiday deals I think I may have a few options.

St. Lucia

This is one island that Lola has ALWAYS wanted to visit. Something about those Pitons, the two mountains St. Lucia is most famous for…I just need to see them for myself. St. Lucia looks soooo lush – full of natural beauty. It’s got some new top hotels and is said to host some of the best street parties in the Caribbean. Helloooo LOLA s!!

19

Well, it appears one of the ‘deals’ to grab on St. Lucia is the 33 room resort, Ti Kaye, meaning ‘little house’ in Creole. Ti Kaye has 33 gingerbread style cottages – 11 of which have their own plunge pools. I’m liking the sound of that! Set on a hillside above a remote sandy beach with great diving, Ti Kaye has 2 restaurants on site, a cave wine cellar, offers non-motorized water sports AND there’s a Managers’ Cocktail soiree every Wednesday night. Offering as much as 40% off if you travel by September 30 – a four night stay is the minimum. Clearly, make sure Wednesday is one of the four nights!

Negril – Jamaica

I really cannot believe I still haven’t been to Jamaica. Negril has the reputation of being a little utopia. The area is full of options for the active traveler offering snorkeling, diving, jet skiing, hiking and horseback riding.

Screen Shot 2013-08-06 at 7.06.19 PM

Well, the best compromise for activity AND a bit of zen is finding a place with both at its fingertips in the Caribbean. The Caves might be such a place. A secluded 10-acre property, The Caves is a tropical castle set above the vibrant town center. So you can be near the local hub and action but still, as The Caves says, have a stay that is “an experience in pure relaxation, comfort and rejuvenation”. Boasting a Top Five Jamaican Spas honor, they must know something about relaxation! Besides a few different dining options on property, The Caves also has The Blackwell Rum Bar – as you do in Jamaica 😉 With only 12 cliff side suites and cottages, I imagine the good deals go quickly. If you travel by October 31, a five night stay starts at $2333 for 2 people. This includes meals, beverages, a 5 course cave dining experience by the sea and a 60 minute full body massage or sugar body scrub. The same deal from November 1-December 14 starts at $2936. SIGN ME UP. I think holiday shopping will be so much more pleasant with a tan!

Harbour Island – Bahamas

Another OMG! It’s ridiculous to believe I have not walked the pink sands of Harbour Island in the Caribbean. I know, can you imagine??? I mean, seriously, my favorite color IS pink.

Screen Shot 2013-08-06 at 7.10.42 PM

I think I’ve found my solution! Rock House – a boutique hotel five minutes from Pink Sands Beach. This property has only 10 British Colonial-styled suites set across the cliffs of Pristine Cove on 8 tropical acres. There’s a 60 foot horizon pool at Rock House but some guests choose to take the stairs carved into the rock down to the cove for their dip. On site, there’s a renowned spa and 2 award-winning restaurants but I’m most intrigued by their notorious Goombay Smash cocktail guests rave about. Awarded “Best Value Hotel in the Caribbean” by Travel & Leisure in March 2012, Rock House is always a good deal. Summer Rates start at $125 for a standard room, $165 for a studio, $325 for a villa & $385 for a premium villa a night. In high season, the Winter rates are $160 for a standard, $205 for a studio, $390 for a villa and $465 for a premium villa a night. Did I mention Rock House is listed in the “1000 Places to See Before You Die” best-selling book? NO?! Well, I better get booking.

Do you have any off-season or shoulder season deals to add in the Caribbean? Lola needs a Winter tan!!

BON VOYAGE: parting thoughts on St. Barts

[youtube=http://youtu.be/b0T9MDSCt-k]

while St. Barts can be a relatively quiet island, you can find the party scene here & there or just create your own party. we managed to witness & participate in one party scene while lounging at Nikki Beach. another place to “party” is ti st. barth. unfortunately our plans to go to ti st. barth coincided with our Nikki Beach afternoon and that was just too much partying for one single day! c’est la vie – next time!

my final PRO for villa renting would be the ability to have your own little party whenever you please. it was fun to have a pool party, dinner party & dance party many of the evenings spent at our villa. (sorry mr. fisherman neighbor if our music was too loud!!)

for more scoop on what’s happening while visiting St. Barts check out stbartslive.com or pick up a copy of le tam tam.

some tunes you may want to add to your playlist that were popular on SBH radio: ride wit me by nelly, memories by david guetta, we no speak americano by yolanda be cool AND i’m from russia by dzham

AU REVOIR St. Barts! i J’ADORE you always!!!

BUY: ooo la la shopping

scenes from gustavia – what you’ll see on your shopping spree

you probably don’t need me to tell you that shopping on St. Barts is great. you can deduce this because a)it’s French and the French love their fashion & b)it IS St. Barts which means everything is casual yet TRES CHIC! after all, SBH was named one of the “world’s 10 best shopping destinations” by Forbes. you’ll find the biggest selection in gustavia or in st. jean.

i will impart some things i came across AND will stress one important TIP that is NOT TO MISS…

TRIP TIPS –

OUCH talk about breaking the bank! St. Barts shopping can take big toll on your funds with all of the fancy designer shops and YES it’s also expensive due to the strength of the euro vs. the US dollar BUT you do have an advantage traveling in May or the summer months because of the sales the stores offer. many were marking down their merchandise 40-50% off when i was there. after the money exchange conversion this is really about 25% off, but saving something is better than nothing – right?! keep in mind many of these items will be full price elsewhere in the world where they are just coming into season.

OK prepare/defend yourself…SBH shopping is really tempting. to help you research your “purchase must-haves”, pick up those glossy island magazines (like chic st. barth, discover saint barthélemy, hello-stbarth) that you see at the airport or seaport upon arrival. at the very least it will familiarize you with some places you may need to check out, or help organize your plan of attack. you may also get lucky enough to witness an impromptu fashion show to entice an “i can’t live without that” purchase as we did during our lunch at hotel isle de france (great store there FYI).

i’m a big fan of finding local & unique things while traveling so that when i wear, see or use my travel purchases i think of the special place it came from. thus, i would HIGHLY recommend items from Ligne St. Barth – a local company that organically grows, manufactures & sells oils, lotions & other beauty essentials right there on the lovely island of SBH herself. i L.O.V.E. the coco sunscreen oil and swear its SPF is better than most even though it says 2% plus it’s completely practical & smells exactly like summertime should. (ps – they were also having a sale on much of their line)

other must-haves might be:

a quintessential souvenir island t-shirt from either pati de st. barth or saint barth attitude. pati de st. barth has been credited with creating the square st. barth’s logo that’s become a famous symbol around the world for the island. i have one of these tee’s and i love it. i did not manage to get a new ‘saint barth attitude’ tee and i’m not happy about it…it goes on the shopping list for next time for sure!

vanita rosa – only on SBH or in Paris – talk about boho-hip…i found the coolest linen tunic that’s adorned with just the right amount of lace here. it’s the kind of thing that i could wear as a cover up or with jeans, shorts, a skirt or even as a dress – it’s THAT versatile! completely worth the money (especially at half off) and probably will be the most coveted thing in my closet that i wear this summer.

pop st. barth – a precious little boutique right on rue de la republique in gustavia – pop st. barth carried dresses and tops that were in such lovely island colors. everything was beautiful and on sale. the designer/owner was so friendly and encouraged us to try things we might not ordinarily try on our own.

my gorgeous tahitian & australian pearl necklace – custom made & oh so versatile

now for my TRIP TIP not to be overlooked…if you’ve been to St. Barts you probably noticed another item that seems to be EVERYWHERE – the gorgeous sea pearl necklaces made on leather cording. i have been coveting one of these babies since last year. bijoux de la mer has a storefront in gustavia and has truly incredible things available for a small fortune. other islanders have caught on to this craze and have begun to create their own designs. ie -hotel isle de france has someone privately making jewelry for them. here’s my fantastic source – St Barth Treasures – designs by Ted Deltour. i was introduced to Ted through Pierre – thanks, yet again, Pierre! i met with Ted, picked out my pearls & style of necklace and then he made it for me for at least 1/2 the price of other retailers. Ted even met us at Nikki Beach to hand deliver my new fabulous purchase. i love the necklace Ted – you are an amazing artist! (post a comment to get Ted’s contact information – website coming soon)
